DO NOT REPLY [Bug 51959] New: Broken link to "Mastering Regular
Expressions, by Jeffrey Friedl" about regular expressions
https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=51959
Bug #: 51959
Summary: Broken link to "Mastering Regular Expressions, by
Jeffrey Friedl" about regular expressions
Product: Apache httpd-2
Version: 2.3-HEAD
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: Documentation
AssignedTo: docs@httpd.apache.org
ReportedBy: chealer@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/en/rewrite/intro.html#regex links to
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/regex2/index.html which yields a 404.
BTW. I think that linking to a book is overkill.

The consensus on the docs list is that this book is what we'd call standard
literature. It's the accepted best reference on the topic, and so linking to it
is the right thing to do, as we simply cannot document in that depth here.

Short term: Link fixed in trunk, 2.2
Longer term: Will discuss on docs list regarding linking to a book.

What are folks' thoughts on this subject - ie, linking to a book from an intro to Regular Expressions? It's unquestionably the best resource on the topic, and it's not in any way self-serving - Jeffrey isn't in any way involved with our project and I don't think I've ever even met him.
Any dissenting voices think we need to remove this link? The topic of external links has come up now and then over the years, but I don't know that we've ever set a firm stance on it.
