Specialization - package

Hello,
I'm new to the log4j community.

I'd like to write for my project a custom fileappender extending the
existing FileAppender.

Am I free (also by a legal point of view) to create this class using the
"org.apache.log4j" package or do I have to use necessarily my packages
(com.xxx.myPackage) ?
