Error on checkout, update, etc. SVN complains that entries file already exists
Hi there,
I have recently installed subversion on a windows XP (SP2) computer and use
the software in local mode, meaning the repository is on the local file
system. Recently I erased my entire working directory and attempted to
perform a clean checkout. I received the following error message:
Error: Can't move 'C:\Projects\SJM\.svn\tmp\entries' to
Error: 'C:\Projects\SJM\.svn\entries': Cannot create a file when that file
already
Error: exists.
After the error occurs the SJM folder only contains the .svn folder (and
subfolder) and nothing else. I looked through the mailing list archives,
FAQ's, documentation, etc. I also googled several key words of this in
Groups and the Web, but I could not find any references to this error
message. I then tried a few different approaches, such as:
Erased the .svn folder within the project folder and attempted another
checkout - same error
Attempted checkout from repository into completely different folder (newly
created) - same error
Copied the repository and attempted checkout from copied repository into yet
another new folder - same error
Upgraded tortoiseSVN to the latest version (from 1.2.5 to 1.2.6 Build 4786)
and attempted a checkout from the repository to a new folder - same error
Executed the checkout from the command line to a new working directory -
same error
I can browse the repository with the 'Repo-browser' just fine and I also
copied the repository to a Windows 2000 computer and attempted a checkout
and that actually worked. So I am sure that the repository itself is fine. I
don't think that it is related to Tortoise SVN since I get the same error
from the command line. If anyone has any other ideas as to how to solve this
problem I would be eternally grateful.
TIA,
Mitch

Hi Frank,
Thanks for the input. By default I always turn 'view hidden files' on. I
actually found the problem. I had uninstalled Stuffit Deluxe for windows and
the problem went away. It turns out Stuffit runs in the background and
attempts to process files it believes are archives. So it keeps a lock on
the file (in this case the entries file) for a short period of time. It
therefore seems to cause the same symptoms as if one was running antivirus
software (which most people have suggested was the issue here). After
removing Stuffit the problem went away and I was able to simply perform
checkouts, updates, etc. I have not had the time to verify this by
reinstalling Stuffit Deluxe to see if Subversion breaks again. Thanks again
for your input.
Regards,
Mitch

Perhaps you deleted only the visible files. Unless you have specifically
told the OS to look for them, you may not have removed the .svn directory
structure that existed in there.
Try opening Explorer (My Computer) > Tools > Folder Options > View > Hidden
Files and Folders > Show Hidden Files and Folders.

Do you have anti-virus software running? Occasionally this can cause
problems with the moves svn does. If yes, try disabling the virus auto
checking and make sure it's not in the background and try again.
