Apache Karaf is the runtime that ServiceMix is built on top of. Essentially, ServiceMix has become redundant, since everything was essentially related to the runtime— Apache Karaf.
For deploying Camel routes, ActiveMQ brokers, and CXF REST/SOAP APIs, using the most recent Apache Karaf is the preferred vs using ServiceMix.

Not really, it's an application container. So, it's more like Tomcat
(kind of app server).
By the way, more than using ServiceMix, I recommend to directly use Karaf.
