How close am I?

Even though I have read and reread the instructions I cannot get Cocoon.xml
to work.

I'm not sure I'm asking the right question but if someone can point me in
the right direction I'll be able to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I installed JServ
I installed cocoon

I uncommented the line:
wrapper.classpath=/usr/local/cocoon/bin/cocoon.jar
in jserv.properties

I added
Action cocoon /servlet/org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon
AddHandler cocoon xml
to jserv.conf

I added the line
Include /etc/httpd/conf/jserv/jserv.conf
in the httpd.conf file.

And this is the one I'm not sure if it's right.
I added the line:
servlet.org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon.initArgs=properties=/usr/local/cocoon/bin/c
ocoon.properties
to the zone.properties

I tried Cocoon.xml and nothing

Then I uncommented this line:
ApJServAction .xml /servlets/org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon
in the jserv.conf file

Does someone know if that's right? It doesn't mention it in the instructions.

Then when I run http://localhost/Cocoon.xml I get this:
Publishing Engine could not be initialized.
java.lang.RuntimeException: Error creating
org.apache.cocoon.parser.XercesParser: make sure the needed classes can be
found in the classpath (org/xml/sax/ErrorHandler)
               at org.apache.cocoon.framework.Manager.create(Manager.java:102)
               at org.apache.cocoon.Engine.(Engine.java:123)
               at org.apache.cocoon.Engine.getInstance(Engine.java:190)
               at org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon.init(Cocoon.java:119)
               at
org.apache.jserv.JServServletManager.load_init(JServServletManager.java:569)
               at
org.apache.jserv.JServServletManager.loadServlet(JServServletManager.java:488)
               at
org.apache.jserv.JServConnection.processRequest(JServConnection.java:266)
               at
org.apache.jserv.JServConnection.run(JServConnection.java:188)
               at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java)

What is this? Do I need to install XercesParser? I didn't think I would
need that for Cocoon. I assume that uncommenting the
ApJServAction .xml /servlets/org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon
line is what I did wrong.

Can someone clue me in? Thank you.

Curt

Curt,

tools.jar should be in the JDK distribution in the "lib" directory. You
may not need "jndi.jar", but then you have to comment out some lines in
cocoon.properties (ldap related?). You can get jndi.jar as part of Java
Naming and Directory (or something like that) on java.sun.com/products.

Thank you for this help. I realize now that I should have known this but I
really missed the boat. Moron on board.
Can I ask where do I get the tools.jar file?
Do I need the jndi.jar file and where do I get that from?

Thanks again.

Re: How close am I?

Curt,

your description sounds right. There are two things you may want to
check:

1.

What I do not see is more stuff in jserv.properties (in
$WHATEVER/jserv/conf). I have there (NT, but you get the point):

wrapper.classpath=d:\apps\apache\jserv\ApacheJServ.jar
wrapper.classpath=g:\java\jsdk\jsdk.jar
wrapper.classpath=g:\java\jndi\lib\jndi.jar
wrapper.classpath=c:\apps\java\jdk12-latest\lib\tools.jar
wrapper.classpath=g:\java\cocoon\bin\cocoon.jar
wrapper.classpath=g:\java\cocoon\lib\xerces-latest.jar
wrapper.classpath=g:\java\cocoon\lib\xalan-latest.jar
wrapper.classpath=g:\java\cocoon\lib\fop-latest.jar
wrapper.classpath=g:\java\cocoon\lib\xml.jar
wrapper.classpath=g:\java\cocoon\lib\servlet_2_2.jar

Please note that "cocoon.jar" is in "bin" rather then "lib".

2.

In my case, "cocoon.properties" in the "conf", rather than "bin"

[You may want to double-check, your setup seem to have
servlet.org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon.initArgs=properties=/usr/local/cocoon/bin/cocoon.properties]

3.

You may want to look at the JServ installation guide and test whether
JServ works - they have a simple test servlet if I remember correctly.

Hope this helps, Milan
