[Issue 127907] New: "sort" operation is not picking up all entries

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127907

          Issue ID: 127907
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: "sort" operation is not picking up all entries
           Product: Calc
           Version: 4.1.5
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows 10
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: Major
          Priority: P5 (lowest)
         Component: editing
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: glennggraves@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

I am trying to sort 1500 entries. First is strictly a year entry, secund and
third are names. Sort is doing approx. 95% of the year entries but is
completely skipping some. It seems to then continue the sort based on the next
two entries. I cannot see any difference between the ones it did porperly and
those it skipped.

Just thought I would let you know that I deleted and redownloaded OO. Problem
is still there but not as bad as before. Only had to move three entries
(different ones than before).

this is the latest sort (after new download of oo)

Sort seems to work until line 1084. After that it is ok except for 1084, 1085.
1086, 1088, 1125 and 1131. Others in that area (basically with a ? on the date
seem to be in order.

--- Comment #4 from Keith N. McKenna <kn...@apache.org> ---
I can confirm this with the following configuration:

Intel (R) Pentium(R) CPU 4405U @2.10GHz, 2112MHz, 2(Core(s) 4 Logical
Processors
Total Physical Memory 8.00 GB
Operating System: Windows 10 Home OS Build 10.0.17134.285 Version 1803
Apache Open Office:
AOO415m1(Build:9789) - Rev. 1817496
2017-12-11 17:25
Additional Language Packs: None

One thing I noticed is that the sort stopped at record 883 and that record 884
was blank. If I deleted record 884 and re-did the sort it did include all
records.

Did you try it after deleting record number 884? If not please try that and
report findings here. Thanks

Thank you for attaching the spreadsheet to this report. The "needmoreinfo" is
just a keyword that we can use to sort on issues. Generally it is applied
because someone has requested more information be added to the report. In this
case a developer had requested the sample document.

sorted last name, first name and year.

Thought I would attach a sort based on (1) last name, (2) first name and (3)
class year. Sort is fine. All entries seem to be exactly where they are
supposed to be.

How about an enhancement that informs user if one Cell differs in type.

Something like:
Cell A1 (start of sort) is not of same Type as C4 (Offending Cell). Then user
can think what the right fix is.

We have another Bug report with the same sorting issue, just with dates and
Strings.
I suggest to create a new Issue report that describes the use case, and link
both as duplicates to the new report, with is made for a developer and
describes what we want to implement.

[Issue 127907] "sort" operation is not picking up all entries

Posted by bu...@apache.org.
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127907

--- Comment #10 from Marcus <ma...@apache.org> ---
Please make sure that the cells contain only numbers that can be sorted. If
they contain additional characters then it's of course not possible:

With a quick test I've found cells E1085, E1086, E1088, E1124. After deleting
the space sorting was OK for me.

I'm pretty sure that this is the root course for all your sorting problems.

I don't know if you would exect this but it's also not possible to sort the
following values together with the pure years or dates:

August 2015 , 05.06.2015 , 1989 , 01/2000 , 2008? , 11/30/1993 ? , 81 or 82

Also some cells contain an apostroph (like in cell D11) at the beginning of the
value - which is only visible in the edit mode of a cell. This is interpreated
also as a non-number and is therefore not sortable.

I hope this helps.
