white space handling

Hello,

 I have got a question on the white space handling by the deserializer of AXIS. Does AXIS retain all the significant and non-significant white spaces after the parsing? What are the critieria to determine whether whitespace is significant or insignificant? Does WSDL contain descriptions of those?
