[Documentation] Configuration stabilized in trunks`

Hi guys,

Looks like a few folks were waiting for today when the bigbang was moved
over with a stable configuration so the documentation team can get to work
without having to deal with a moving target.

Just wanted to send out this email to make it clear that what we have in the
trunk will most likely be what we have in 2.0 as far as the configuration is
generally concerned. A slight tweak may occur who knows but this is the
responsibility of the tweaker to edit the documentation for an update of the
change.

As far as the documentation team is concerned the configuration is frozen.
Feel free to begin a 2.0 documentation stream.

Thanks,
Alex

Oh yes that's a good idea! I would just go ahead and request the space
creation from infra. If someone objects we can always remove it but I doubt
anyone would. Once 2.0 is out and the documentation is complete we can just
delete this 1.5 (labeled 1.1) space.

Thanks Emmanuel!

I must correct myself a bit: the installers project in bigbang has been
fixed and compiles. It seems that the merge of this part to trunk has
not taken place.

Anyway, an "mvn install" in project "installers" is successful (some
warnings) but does not create any installer. Perhaps I am missing something.

Chris? Thanks in advance.

Stefan

This is just a little note that I was able to create a Win32 native
installer from the bigbang branch, which sucessfully installed ApacheDS,
set up a windows service etc, and the server starts and talks to the
outside.

I will use this version to document configuration changes (new
server.xml style), if relevant to the Basic User's Guide (which I plan
to update for the 2.0 first).

For redoing the Open Group certification tests for the upcoming 2.0, the
apacheds-noarch installer would be nice. Unfortunately, this one does
not build. "mvn install" is successful, but there is a warning like

[WARNING] Attempting to build MavenProject instance for Artifact of
type: jar; constructing POM artifact instead.

The build states "succesful". but the resulting jar
apacheds-noarch-installer-1.5.2-SNAPSHOT.jar is only 14 kB.

Do I miss something here?

Anyway, for my documentation task, the native installers will do.

Greetings,
     Stefan

Thanks a lot Stefan. If you have any kind of problem while writing the
documentation, just ping us : we will urgently fix the bug so that you
can make progress. Documentation is as important as the code, maybe more
... (nobody read the code, when a few people read the doc. Yes, this is
not an urban legend !)

My plan is to complete a first version of the Basic User's Guide for the
2.0 version this year, because the next weeks I have some time due to
holidays.

Unfortunately, the installers in trunk do not compile, because they use
the old StartupConfiguration style.

Is it possible to fix this until Xmas? My skills are unfortunately not
sufficient.

I can do other parts of the guide first (and other tasks as well), but
the description of the installation for various OS is important for
newbies.

Fixing in bigbang branch would be enough for me. Basically, I just need
to figure out how a binary download version of ApacheDS 2.0 will look
like. For instance to test the different configuration tasks with a
fresh installation.

Thanks in advance,
     Stefan

Thanks, Ersin!
I have started to move and revise the Basic Users's Guide

Granted write access to all directory commiters.

Not yet being published as static pages.

Not viewable by anonymous users.

That would be the best solution, IMO. We can ask for a special space,
but not directly pointed by the web site, so that we can benefit from
the current editing system we have (the little icon on top right of each
page).

You are absolutely right here, Alex. Thanks for clarifying this.

Currently, we have these cwiki spaces:

* Apache Directory Server v1.0  (DIRxSRVx10)
* Apache Directory Server v1.5  (DIRxSRVx11)

How about starting a new space for 2.0, which will not be published to
static pages at first?

Rationale: I do not want to modify/overwrite the 1.5 documentation,
because there are users out there, who need it. But I would like to
start the documentation for the simplified configuration style which
comes with 2.0. If we have a separate space, we could start with that
task, and make the content available on directory.apache.org if needed.

Thoughts? Christine?

Greetings from Hamburg,
     Stefan
