[Zeppelin-684] GSoC - 2016

Hello,
My name is Paul and I'm a computer science master student at University of
Sao Paulo, Brazil. I am interested in developing the notebooks with Helium.
I have developed an example [0][1] using Google maps and a public dataset
of Uber [2].

Currently, I'm working with Machine Learning for my master's project, so
I'm familiar with classification, clustering and other methods of ML.

I would appreciate that you evaluate my proposal. It is shared in a google
doc [3].

Best regards,
Paul Bustios

Thank you Paul, that sounds great!

Looking forward more awesome notebooks. I know for sure that good ones take
some time to come up with, take your time just please keep the list posted.

Re: [Zeppelin-684] GSoC - 2016

Posted by Paul Bustios Belizario <pb...@gmail.com>.
Hi Alexander,

Thanks for your understanding, I'll post reports for the next weeks for
sure.

Regarding to the EEG notebook, to tell the truth it took a while, I made
some iterations on it and it's part of my work that will appear in a
conference soon. I'll include the link to my paper in the notebook as soon
as it appears published.

Now, I'm working on my third notebook and some improvements on the second
one. As soon as I finished them, I'll let you know.

Regards,
Paul

Re: [Zeppelin-684] GSoC - 2016

Posted by Alexander Bezzubov <bz...@apache.org>.
Hi Paul,

thank you for explanation, we all know that things can happen all of a
sudden and in ways we did not plan or account for but communication is the
key. Glad to see you back, hope that going further if something unexpected
happens that might distract you from taking part in your GSoC project - you
will let us know asap.

From now on, could you please post weekly report, every friday in this
mailing list, tracking your progress?

There are 6 more weeks of the program, and I just want to make the
expectations very clear:
 - in order to succesfully accomplish GSoC, there must be no less than 5
weekly reports though that period on a public mailing list
 - each is expected to highlight the week time of ~40 working hours
 - total number of notebooks produced is expected to be around 8 (but that
is not set in stone, as we do not want to trade quality for quantity)

You previous work on EEG is awesome, we are looking forward more high
quality notebooks like that!

Re: [Zeppelin-684] GSoC - 2016

Posted by Paul Bustios Belizario <pb...@gmail.com>.
Hi Alexander,

I am really sorry about that. I had an unexpected problem. I am conscious
that I haven't achieved the objectives of the plan, but now I'm working on
that and I will fulfill all the objectives proposed, for sure.

I started the blog here: http://zeppelinnotebooks.blogspot.com.br/

And I'm starting the third notebook. It is only a matter of time to reach
all targets.

Best regards,
Paul

Re: [Zeppelin-684] GSoC - 2016

Posted by Alexander Bezzubov <bz...@apache.org>.
Hi Paul,

thanks for sharing feedback on the Python interpreter! Did you have a
chance to look more into that? Logging JIRA issues could be a good start.

In order to finalize mid-term evaluation (in next few hours) I'd like to
ask you to help to understand your current progress, especially regarding
the schedule from the proposal you have wrote before.

So far from what one can see, there are 2 notebooks (7 commits total, all
from June 23rd) in [1] and that's it. Please feel free to add if I'm
missing something here.

AFAIK the plan and communicated expectations were: to have at least 4
notebooks, with iterations on community feedback + a blog post.

Was there anything that held you back from archiving those goals?

I'd like to remind that expectations were that you spend about 40h a week
on the project for last month or so, and may be I have missed that, so
could you please submit again evidence of doing so?

Below there is a quote from proposal.

May 23 June 25
● Implementation of 4 notebooks. 7-8 days for each one.
○ Data analysis. This includes data cleaning and processing. This will be
made
using Zeppelin and will be part of the notebook as a real application 2
days
○ Selecting the machine learning model and an appropriate custom GUI to
show
the results in Zeppelin. Writing code and documentation 3 days
○ Testing, bug fixing, receiving suggestions from the community to improve
the
notebook 3 days
○ Creating blog post documenting the progress along the way

Thanks in advance,
Alexander.

Re: [Zeppelin-684] GSoC - 2016

Posted by Paul Bustios Belizario <pb...@gmail.com>.
Hi Alexander,

Sorry for the late response. Yes, I have one notebook
<https://www.zeppelinhub.com/viewer/notebooks/aHR0cHM6Ly9yYXcuZ2l0aHVidXNlcmNvbnRlbnQuY29tL2J1c3Rpb3MvemVwcGVsaW4tbm90ZWJvb2tzL21hc3Rlci8yQktZVEpNSjUvbm90ZS5qc29u>[1]
almost finished and I'm finishing another
<https://www.zeppelinhub.com/viewer/notebooks/aHR0cHM6Ly9yYXcuZ2l0aHVidXNlcmNvbnRlbnQuY29tL2J1c3Rpb3MvemVwcGVsaW4tbm90ZWJvb2tzL21hc3Rlci8yQlE2VVRRWUcvbm90ZS5qc29u>[2]
in the next ours. This notebook uses Python as main programming language,
and using the %python interpreter I found some minor problems:

   1. In successive calls to print(some_text), after the first call, it is
inserted a blank space at the beginning of the next prints.
   2. For some figures, using the %python interpreter takes more time to
produce them than using the %pyspark interpreter.

The notebooks are here <https://github.com/bustios/zeppelin-notebooks> [3]

Best regards,
Paul

That sounds great, Paul!

Sorry if I missed it, but as project mid-term evaluation is coming are
there any updates that you have been sharing with mentors\community on your
progress?

Thanks!

Re: [Zeppelin-684] GSoC - 2016

Posted by Paul Bustios Belizario <pb...@gmail.com>.
Hi Alexander,

Thanks for the welcome and advice. Currently I'm checking the Helium
implementation in https://github.com/apache/incubator-zeppelin/pull/836
I'm planning to show an example of notebook to the community in order to
get feedback. In the next days I'll do a report of that.

Cheers,
Paul

Re: [Zeppelin-684] GSoC - 2016

Posted by Alexander Bezzubov <bz...@apache.org>.
Hi Paul,

welcome and congratulations on being accepted - it's great to have you
on-board.

It is a community-bonding period of the program now, so in order to be able
to start the project on time students are expected to start preparing for
it (build Helium, run it, explore visualization options, submit small
fixes\patches, improve the docs, etc) and participate in public community
work by helping other users on the list, etc.

Please mind that successful accomplishment of community-bonding period is
pre-request in order for a project to succeed, as well as mid-term and
final evaluations are.

Let me know if you have further questions and I'm looking forward more
awesome notebooks built using great public datasets!

Re: [Zeppelin-684] GSoC - 2016

Posted by Paul Bustios Belizario <pb...@gmail.com>.
Hi Alexander,

7-8 notebooks sounds reasonable to me. I will adjust the schedule and
include that in my proposal.

About adding my work on Electroencephalograms, I can do that, I just
thought that big data sets would be more attractive, but there is no
problem, the data sets I'm using are public as well.

Documenting the progress along the way is a great idea. I will keep it in
mind.

I'll include all these suggestions in my proposal.

Thank you,
Paul

Re: [Zeppelin-684] GSoC - 2016

Hi Paul,

thank you for sharing the proposal! I have added your proposal to GSoC wiki
page [1].

It loos great, and here are couple of notes on the proposal scope:

As far as I understood, you plan for the whole summer includes 4 notebooks
total, ~15 days for each. As all students are expected to have GSoC as a
full-time commitment for the 3 summer months, ~8h a day I would say plan of
creating just 4 notebooks does not immediately sound very ambitious and
challenging. On a very rough estimate: 3 moths = 12 week, so from the top
of my head I would expect a full 40h week per single notebook is kind or
reasonable to start with, and then add some time to get started, etc, etc
so overall at least about 7-8 notebooks is an expectation that I had in
mind and we could discuss further.
What do you think?

I.e you are already working on Electroencephalograms, why not to include
that one as one of the examples? There is no pressure of course, just want
to discuss\set expectations for both sides here.

One more thing is, as I mentioned before, as this project is not immediate
code contributions to Zeppelin core, but more of the outreach, library
building project - the expectations are that you will at least create a
blog posts, documenting your progress along the way and spreading the word
about your work
That may be it's worth mentioning in the proposal as well, or may be done
just naturally along the way, it's up to you.

Please let me know what you think!

And please do not forget to submit the proposal (be that draft or not) to
the google before the deadline with is quite close now!

Hi Paul,

Just FYI, I think it's much better and safe to share your doc with only
comment privileges instead of editing.
Otherwise anyone with the link to the doc would be able to change its
content.

Cheers
