[users@httpd] Virtual domain, sub domain questions
Hi,
Im trying to add a new http site & new e-mail accounts which would use a
virtual domain, i.e. joe@any.name.maindomain.com ,
www.any.name.maindomain.com for my existing virtual domain
www.maindomain.com site. This is a name based domain, not IP based.
I can edit my httpd.conf file OK and add the new (sub?) domain to a new
virtual host tag. My questions are:
Do I also need to add the www.any.name.maindomain.com to DNS server records
and create MX records for www.any.name.maindomain.com on DNS? Or would
any.name.maindomain.com automatically point to the existing DNS and MX
records for maindomain.com domain via DNS?
Would httpd.conf be all I need edit to set this up (that and my MTA)?
So I dont confuse anyone (or myself), what is the proper term for the
appended domain name www.any.name.maindomain.com (in other words, any.name.
appended to maindomain.com)?
Thanks to anyone who can provide info.

Yes, usually. The requirement is more of a legacy tradition, than very
useful. For many, if the primary DNS box is down, the its hosts are in most
cases also down.
> Is there a way to do my own DNS on just one server?
If you can throw two IP addresses on your box and run a server on each, you
can. DNS is not a simple thing, so indepth tutoring on this list is not
appropriate. If you are on *nix (or anything else for that matters) you want
to run BIND, and it should have a mailing list around somewhere.

Thanks Todd,
Most registrars require a secondary DNS, is this in case the primairy server
is off line?
Is there a way to do my own DNS on just one server?

Simply put. No.
You bought a domain inside of a Top Level Domain (tld) from a domain
registrar, who can resell domains.
You then own everything and can control everything that is "below" that
domain.
so you can have host0.maindomain.com, host1.maindomain.com,
node.slice.server.maindomain.com
Some DNS server hosts your Primary DNS.
And others secondary off of that
$ host -t ns maindomain.com
maindomain.com name server dns2.1-800-hosting.com.
maindomain.com name server dns1.1-800-hosting.com.
*usually* one of the Nameserver hosts listed is the Primary.
In short, what has to happen is your primary dns server must ADD an A (and
MX as I believe you mentioned before) record.
For example (and it's brief):
...
IN A 123.45.67.89
www IN A 123.45.67.89
home IN CNAME www
web IN CNAME www
slice.server IN CNAME www
...
That would tell slice.server to go to www, which tells www to go to
123.45.67.89, which is where your server has it's httpd process listening on
port 80, and your httpd is setup to host www and slice.server with different
configurations.
So your list:
1) find your primary dns server.
2) have the admin add your requested A record to your dns and reload it.
a) The change will take as long as the TTL is set for and propagation.
b) read up on DNS and BIND.
3) ping test host.maindomain.com.
ping host.maindomain.com
(if dns is setup properly you'll get your ip and packets back)
4) setup your apache server to handle host.maindomain.com.

Hello Robert,
Yes the maindomain.com is registered by me, I set up the name server
addresses
at netsol and pointed them to the DNS server for maindomain.com. If I want
to
attach or create a subdomain.maindomain.com, I don't need to do anything
with the registrars entries do I?

Is the zone maindomain.com registered to you? If so, you are responsible for
any hosts you configure the authorative DNS, and do not have to 'register'
anything that lies below it. Then, I may not perfectly understand your
situation.

Thanks for the info Todd,
One last question, do I also need to register www.any.name.maindomain.com
with the domain registrar of the main domain? Such as with netsol
or dotster, etc. and attach the sub to the main registrars DNS address?
Or will the name server address in the registrars record
for the main domain point the sub domain to the main's DNS,
and then the sub domain will resolve properly from there?

Run a test... (using host (or dig)) (and your (obviously bogus) server)
$ host www.any.name.maindomain.com
Host www.any.name.maindomain.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
So that means it isn't found in DNS.

I've seen these ways:
server.domain.tld
subdomain.domain.tld
sub2.sub1.domain.tld

Not normally. You can use wildcard domains for this, but that's not recommended unless you know *exactly* why you have the need for it (for example, I use a wildcard MX for *.frukt.org, but that's for a internet mail<>FTN mail gateway that can understand a number of different adressing schemes and handles an arbitrary amount of FTN hosts).
> Would httpd.conf be all I need edit to set this up (that and my

No. The httpd server has nothing at all to do with the DNS lookups. Noone is going to ask your http server what IP adress to use when connecting to a doman name.
