[ANNOUNCE] Apache Groovy 4.0.0-rc-1 Released

Dear community,

The Apache Groovy team is pleased to announce version 4.0.0-rc-1 of
Apache Groovy.
Apache Groovy is a multi-faceted programming language for the JVM.
Further details can be found at the https://groovy.apache.org website.

This is a pre-release of a new version of Groovy.
We greatly appreciate any feedback you can give us when using this version.

This release includes 26 bug fixes/improvements as outlined in the changelog:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/ReleaseNote.jspa?projectId=12318123&version=12350848

Sources, convenience binaries, downloadable documentation and an SDK
bundle can be found at: https://groovy.apache.org/download.html
We recommend you verify your installation using the information on that page.

Jars are also available within the major binary repositories.

We welcome your help and feedback and in particular want
to thank everyone who contributed to this release.

For more information on how to report problems, and to get involved,
visit the project website at https://groovy.apache.org/

Best regards,

The Apache Groovy team.

Oh, that's great. I could not find those release notes. Perhaps they
could be linked from the groovy homepage and from the download page.
They answer almost all my questions and are probably useful for others.

In short (for my needs), lots of nice things but nothing quite as
potentially disruptive as a the move to the parrot parser was for 2->3,
so the upgrade should be fairly safe.

You'd be better off looking at the release notes rather than the changelogs:

https://groovy-lang.org/releasenotes/groovy-4.0.html

But I'll try to summarise the release notes here shortly.

Cheers, Paul.

Hi team

Thanks for all your hard work on groovy. Would you be able to describe
in summary the big picture of moving from version 3 to 4.

Groovy 3 appeared to be an important change largely because of the new
parrot parser. However looking at the giant list of version 4 changes
[1] is hard since most of these changes already landed in version 3.

What should we be looking out for in our testing of version 4?

Ari
