Issues on ARM32 and windows deployments demonstrate that this commit may be causing a fault.

[~bakaid] I saw a deprecation in this commit. I'm going to add arguments for that DEPRECATION that support when it was deprecated and the release when we expect to remove it. I'll post the gist to this so we can synchronize on that.
