Merging trunk back into 2.1

Hi Guys,

I just merged the HEAD branch back into the 2.1 branch, but
the commit message won't come through because the message
is over 100K :-) Whoops. Anyway the 2.1 branch is up-to-date
with the HEAD now as no 2.2 specific work has been done yet.
