Memory issue in Flash Player 11.2
All,
I've noticed that a Flex app running in Flash player 11.2 has about twice the memory footprint as 10.3 - Have anybody else noticed this? Trying to verify if this is definitely a player issue or not.
Any input would be appreciated.

Also noticed that it's leaking... 100 mb in 20 minutes...
Whilst in 10.2, it's rock steady..

I wouldn't be surprised. I've seen similar issues in the past with AIR, but it was because of the embedded Flash runtime. I haven't done any tests myself, and probably won't have time to anytime soon.

Nope, not running 50 frames a second. A timer can execute twice in one frame.
The actual problem is a trading application where the client is receiving messages from the server side. At peak loads, the client gets up to 200 messages a second, and subsequently does a bunch of processing on those quotes. As a side effect, the client generates a large amount of immutable (unreferenced) objects, and this seems to be compounding the problem in 11.2 - In 10.3, the unreferenced objects gets GC'd pretty regularly.

If your 'slice' is 20 ms... it would appear that you are inferring a frame rate of 50 fps? Is that correct?
If it is, this seems a bit excessive for a Flex application unless you're doing some serious animation. Keep in mind that 1000 ms = 1 second = [ frame rate ] x [ ms slice ]... anything less / more than this will often lead to the perception that something that should be happening isn't ( e.g. a self-imposed race condition ).
What I'm trying to say is that I would recommend aiming for an 'ideal' test scenario where a majority would agree that the given example should perform without issues - then proceed to extremes ( render heavy / script heavy frames ) in order to determine where failures begin to appear.
Be prepared for questions like, "is it possible that the routine(s) in question weren't performing optimally before... and that FP changes no longer hide my flabby code-stuffs?"
So... I would think that it would be in Adobe's best interest to share any benchmarking tools they use internally for Flash Player with this project. More eyes = more fun! Just sayin'

We definitely see it collecting garbage for us, but it is leaking like crazy too and it certainly uses a lot more memory for the same Flex app. This has huge impact to us as well so we are also working on it.

I did some more testing and found that it seems to be a case of GC never collecting any garbage. I set up an app to create a new object and assign it to a property every 20 milliseconds. On 10.3 and 11.1 the memory footprint remained steady. On 11.2, it grew and grew.
A couple of guys from the player team got in touch and are looking at it though.

Was just playing with this. *if* my limited investigation is correct, it looks like NetConnection calls are once again leaking memory... we helped get this fixed last time. Let me see if I can find those old test harnesses.

Hi,

You didn't mention the OS you were running on (or SDK version) and as I said it was just a guess - obviously wrong in this case.
I've not noticed any major memory leaks on 11.2 over previous versions of the Flash Player, but that's not to say they don't exist. There are a few know Flex SDK ones eg playing video in Flex.
Re leaking have you run the application though the profiler? While not perfect it can give you more info to where the leak is and you may be able to work around it.
Thanks,
Justin

Using the SDK compiled for 10.3 I assume (which would be an older version of the SDK as well?)
My guess would be that that it's a 32 bit vs 64 bit memory issue (but only a guess and I've not checked in any way).
Thanks,
Justin

Please file a bug here: https://bugbase.adobe.com/
Apache Flex has no control over Adobe's release/patch processes.

Hi all,
since few days I've got some customers who reports memory leaks recently.
we develop a lot of flash applications for live audio streaming (most of
them are progressive download), so we are really concerned with this issue.
I hope adobe will release a fix really soon.
our customers report problems on windows 7 and the latest flash plugin
version, both with IE/firefox/chrome :(
