cordova.io domain name

Hi all,

The domain renewal for cordova.io is due in March 2013.

How do other Apache projects manage custom domains? I've searched around
apache.org without much luck.

During our incubation period, there was a brief discussion about the domain
name, but little progress was made. For myself, there are two questions:

1. Does the Apache foundation accept domain transfers?
  - It seems wrong to have a single person in charge of the domain
ownership.
  - Regardless, I wil continue to renew the domain if Apache does not want
the responsibility.

2. Does Apache infrastructure support custom domains?
  - So that we do not need to do the domain redirect.
  - Since CouchDB uses redirects as well, I am guessing the answer is "no"

The only resource that I can find is on website management [1]. However, it
does not address domain names.

Thanks,
Michael

Hello everyone,

I've hit a dead-end in my efforts to donate the cordova.io domain to
Apache, so it looks like I'll remain the owner.

I've renewed the domain for 2 years and it will expire next on March 27
2015.

Adobe sponsored the renewal cost of approx €60, so thank you Adobe!

Cheers,
Michael

Update from my IRC #asfinfra chat:

Apache has a strong stance that the domain must be project.apache.org [1].
Custom domains can be used but must redirect to the original domain and
cannot mask the original domain. Also, custom domains cannot contain the
word "apache".

There are precedents where domains have been donated to Apache.
Unfortunately, they were not able to provide any specifics. I did find an
example where Oracle donated OpenOffice.org to Apache [2]. However, the
infrastructure guys emphasized that OpenOffice is a special case and has
been an example to a number of rules.

So, as it stands, I'm where I was before.

My main outstanding question is: Can I donate cordova.io to Apache. If so,
how?

Yea, I'll jump into the IRC channel today. I thought I'd check here in case
anyone has some magical wiki links about it.

Ask infra? I'm afraid of what they'll say but probably have to do it.
