<p>The CMS Adapter component acts as a bridge between content management systems and the Apache Stanbol. Please note that all components of Apache Stanbol also provides RESTful services which allow accessing them directly from outside. CMS Adapter interacts with content management systems through JCR and CMIS specifications. In other words, any content repository compliant with JCR or CMIS specifications can make use of CMS Adapter functionalities. For the time being, there are two main functionalities that CMS Adapter offers: "Bidirectional Mapping" and "Contenthub Feed". </p>

<p>Apache Stanbol is built as a modular set of components. Each component is accessible via its own RESTful web interface. From this viewpoint, all Apache Stanbol features can be used via RESTful service calls. The components are implemented as <a href="http://www2.osgi.org/Specifications/HomePage">OSGi</a> components based on <a href="http://felix.apache.org">Apache Felix</a>.</p>
<p>This page gives an overview of the major features of various Apache Stanbol components. Figure 1 depicts the main Apache Stanbol components and their arrangement within the Apache Stanbol architecture. Additionally, we have documented some <a href="scenarios.html">usage scenarios</a>.</p>

<h1 class="title">Using Apache Stanbol for enhancing textual content</h1>
<p>For enhancing content you simply post plain text content to the Enhancement Engines and you will get back enhancement data. The enhancement process is stateless, so neither your content item, nor the enhancements will be stored. </p>

<p>The Apache Stanbol Contenthub is an Apache Solr based document repository which enables storage of text-based documents and customizable semantic search facilities. Contenthub exposes an efficient Java API together with the corresponding RESTful services. </p>
<p>Contenthub is basically a document repository. A document within Contenthub is referred as a "Content Item". A content item consists of metadata of the document in addition to the text-based content of the document. Contenthub has two main subcomponents, namely Store and Search. As their names indicate, Store is specifically responsible for persistent storage of content items. And Search provides strong semantic search facilities on top of the content items.</p>

<p>The GraphChain allows to directly configure the ExecutionPlan returned by the Chain.getExecutionPlan() method. This means on the one hand that it allows to configure any kind of execution process on the other hand its usage also requires a lot of knowledge about the <a href="../engines">EnhancementEngine</a>s and the ExecutionPlan model.</p>
<p>Typically it is a good practice to start with other - more simple to use - Chain implementation such as the <a href="weightedchain.html">Weighted Chain</a> and only afterwards convert this configuration to a GraphChain to configure optimizations to the enhancement process such as to allow more engines to be executed in parallel.</p>

<p>The ListChain creates the ExecutionPlan based on the exact order of the configured <a href="../engines">EnhancementEngines</a>. This provides users with a simple possibility to configure the exact oder in which the referenced EnhancementEngines are called during the enhancement process of a content item. However the ListChain can not support parallel execution of engines - a considerable disadvantage in contrast to the <a href="graphchain.html">GraphChain</a>.</p>
<p>A typical usage scenario would be that users start of with configuring a ListChain and later optimize the execution by migrating functional configuration to a <a href="graphchain.html">GraphChain</a>.</p>

<p><a href="http://linkeddata.org/">Linked Data</a> describes the idea of linking - formally unconnected - bits of data over the web. Think about how hyperlinks are used to navigate within the Web of documents. Linked data tries to do the same for the Web of Data. This basic idea is also central to most of the Apache Stanbol Components. However Stanbol is not only concerned about about linking data but also with interlinking the web of documents with the web of data. Therefore <a href="http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-lod/2011May/0019.html">this proposal</a> to extend Linked Data principles to also support content and not just data seams like a natural fit for Apache Stanbol.</p>

<p>The FactStore is a component that let's use store relations between entities identified by their URIs. A relation between two or more entities is called a <em>fact</em>. The FactStore let's you store N-ary facts according to a user defined fact schema. In consequence you can store relations between N participating entities. The FactStore only stores the relation and not the entities itself. It only uses references to entities by using the entities' URI. The entities itself should be handled by another component, e.g. the <a href="../entityhub/">Entityhub</a>. A fact is defined by a fact schema which is defined over types of entities.</p>
<p>A fact schema can be defined between an arbitrary number of entities. In most cases a fact schema is defined between two or three entities. For example, the fact schema 'works-for' can be defined as a relation between entities of type 'Person' and 'Organization'. The Fact Store interface allows the creation of custom fact schemata and to store facts according to these custom schemata. The Fact Store provides a simple way to define and store facts. This component is meant to be used in scenarios where a simple solution is sufficient and it is not required to define a complex ontology with reasoning support.</p>

<p>The Stanbol Ontology Manager provides a <strong>controlled environment</strong> for managing ontologies, <strong>ontology networks</strong> and user sessions for semantic data modeled after them. It provides full access to ontologies stored into the Stanbol persistence layer. Managing an ontology network means that you can activate or deactivate parts of a complex model from time to time, so that your data can be viewed and classified under different "logical lenses". This is especially useful in <a href="reasoners.html">Reasoning</a> operations.</p>

<p>Stanbol OntoNet implements the API section for managing OWL and OWL2 ontologies, in order to prepare them for consumption by reasoning services, refactorers, rule engines and the like. Ontology management in OntoNet is sparse and not connected: once loaded internally from their remote locations, ontologies live and are known within the realm they were loaded in. This allows loose-coupling and (de-)activation of ontologies in order to scale the data sets for reasoners to process and optimize them for efficiency. </p>

<p>Registry management is a facility for Stanbol <strong>administrators</strong> to pre-configure sets of ontologies that Stanbol should load and store, or simply be aware of, <em>before</em> they are included in a part of the ontology network (e.g. a scope or session). Via the registry manager, it is possible to configure whether these ontologies should be loaded immediately when Stanbol is initialized, or only when explicitly requested. The Ontology Registry Manager is essentially an ontology bookmarker with caching support. It is also possible to cache multiple versions of the same ontology if needed.</p>

<p>Stanbol Rules is a component that supports the construction and execution of inference rules. An <strong>inference rule</strong>, or transformation rule, is a syntactic rule or function which takes premises and returns a conclusion. Stanbol Rules allows to add a layer for expressing business logics by means of axioms, which encode the inference rules. These axioms can be organized into a container called <strong>recipe</strong>, which identifies a set of rules that share the same business logic and interpret them as a whole.</p>

<p>The Refactor is a service which allows to interpret rules in order to perform refactoring of RDF graphs. For the refactoring the set of rules in the recipes are interpreted and run as SPARQL CONTRUCT in which the where clause is derived from the body of the rule and the construct clause is derived from the head of the rule. The output of a refactoring is a transformed graph which satisfies the constraints expressed in the rules. The refactoring in useful for tasks of semantic harmonization of RDF graphs expressed with different ontologies/vocabularies towards their representation with a single ontology or vocagulary.
