DO NOT REPLY [Bug 119004] New: Cannot install on clean Windows XP
SP3
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=119004
Bug #: 119004
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Cannot install on clean Windows XP SP3
Classification: Application
Product: Installation
Version: OOo 3.4 Beta
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Windows XP
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: blocker
Priority: P3
Component: ui
AssignedTo: ooo-issues@incubator.apache.org
ReportedBy: hzybura@zybura.com
I installed file
http://people.apache.org/~orw/DevSnapshots-Rev.1293550/win32/OOo_3.4.0_Win_x
86_install_en-US.exe
on a clean English win xp professional sp3 virtual machine repeatedly and I'm
always getting
"Error: An error occurred during registration of extensions!" at the end of the
installation process.
Both with installation option "install for all users" and "only for me".
With the error message still open, i.e. installation not rolled back yet, there
are no files in standard path
C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 3\share\extensions
except for "package.txt".
The same happens on a freshly created Win XP Pro SP3 (German) virtual machine
(Virtual PC) with nothing else installed but automatic security updates
(up-to-date), Virtual Machine Additions, and Firefox.
MSI log file attached.
In the log file, search for "Executing op:
CustomActionSchedule(Action=RegisterExtensions,ActionType=1025,Source=BinaryData,Target=RegisterExtensions,CustomActionData=C:\Program
Files\OpenOffice.org 3\)"
to go straight to the action causing the error.

my vm is a win xp 32bit sp3 machine (german) with all available security fixes,
running on a vista 32bit host (virtual pc 2007).
.Net Framework 4.0 is installed.
just some thoughts:
- have you removed all previous oo installations?
- have you cleaned the registry, for example removed all
"com.sun.star.ServiceManager" entries?
- have you checked the windows firewall?
i remember, java.exe, uno.exe, unopkg.exe, soffice.exe
will ask for privileges
- do you run internet security/antivirus software?
- have you installed a MVC++ Redistributable?

@Hans
i will attach a small c++ program which will call "unopkg.exe sync"
as the installer does.
maybe you can copy an existing oo program folder into your vm and
run the "CreateProcess.exe".
for debugging purpose i would use "procmon.exe" from sysinternal
and set a filter for ""Process Name" is "unopkg.exe""

Oliver

Thus, we have a strange situation:
On same Windows XP environments the defect occurs and on same not.
I am asking the people, esp. the ones above, to provide more information about
their system, if not already done - language, SPs, ... in order to find out
under which conditions the defect occurs. Otherwise it would be hard to fix it,
because it looks like that currently no developer could reproduce the defect.

Ups, I have to add a 3rd possibility to my conclusions:
"In my view, either unopkg must be changed to not depend on MSVC++ 9.0.30729
Redistr, or the latter has to be included in the installation package of AOO
3.4"
It may also be the case that MSVC++ 9.0.30729 IS in fact part of the
installation package, but not installed because of some remnants of an earlier
OOo installation.

By now I have tested installing /DevSnapshots-Rev.1293550/win32/OOo_3.4.0_Win_x
86_install_en-US.exe and /DevSnapshots-Rev.1293550/win32/OOo_Dev_3.4.0_Win_x
86_install_en-US.exe on 5 different Windows XP virtual machines, all with the
same result:
"Error: An error occurred during registration of extensions!"
All vm's are clean in the sense that they never had an installation of an
earlier version of OOo or LibreOffice. Otherwise, they differ in "cleanliness".
1. XP 32-Bit SP3 English, security upd., old, MS Office 2000 and 2003, vm
hosted with Virtual PC 2007 on a very fast Windows 7 64-Bit system
2. XP 32-Bit SP3 German, fresh, security upd., Firefox, both before installing
.Net 2.0 and after, vm hosted with Virtual PC 2007 on a very fast Windows 7
64-Bit system
3. another XP 32-Bit SP3 German, fresh, security upd., both before and after
installing
- .Net 4.0 (repeated testing)
- Java Runtime Environment (repeated testing)
- Windows 7.3 SDK (repeated testing)
This vm is hosted with Virtual Box on a very fast Windows 7 64-Bit system
4. XP 32-Bit SP2 German, old, used for testing VBA-AddIns on MS Word 2000, vm
hosted with Virtual PC 2007 on an old, slow Win XP SP3 host system.
5. A different XP 32-Bit SP3 German, old, used for testing VBA-AddIns on MS
Word 2002, vm hosted with Virtual PC 2007 on an old, slow Win XP SP3 host
system. Main difference ist formatting of virtual hard disk: FAT32 here
More testing:
On VM No. 1 I installed OOo 3.3. No problem. Then installed AOO 3.4. over it.
No problem, everything is fine. Then uninstalled AOO 3.4 again, uninstalled
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable (installed by OOo 3.3!!), uninstalled
JRE, and cleaned the file system: deleted folders OpenOffice.org in user
profile AND in Program Files, in Windows Registry I used search term
"OpenOffice" -> deleted every appearance. That's all, not that bad.
Then tried to install AOO 3.4 again. Result:
"Error: An error occurred during registration of extensions!"
Means: 1) I could clean a tainted (but not heavily loaded with other programs)
test system easily to the point from where I could invoke the same error as
before. 2) Next candidates for testing are absence/presence of Microsoft Visual
C++ 2008 Redistributable (from the OOo 3.3 package) and OpenOffice 3 folder in
Program Files.
If this isn't confirmation enough, I don't know the meaning of it.

Code pointers for volunteers:
The relevant code for RegisterExtensions() in
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/ooo/trunk/main/setup_native/source/win32/customactions/shellextensions/registerextensions.cxx
suggests that it just tries to run a "unopkg.exe sync".
Unopkg.exe itself is created from the sources in
main/desktop/source/deployment/unopkg/

Additional tests with AOO 3.4 DevSnapshots-Rev.1293550
I installed OOo 3.3 on a clean vm WinXP 32.
Next, I uninstalled only MSVC++ 9.0.30729, which was installed by OOo 3.3
Then I installed AOO 3.4 over OOo 3.3. This time, the installation went
through.
But no MSVC++ Redistributable was installed by AOO 3.4!!
Oliver Brinzing wrote: "on my xp vm unopkg.exe uses MSVC++ 9.0.30729" with the
sync command
At this stage, his test-programm "CreateProcess" for running unopkg sync
returns 0 on my vm, which means failed, as the msgbox says.
Conclusion:
- AOO 3.4 DevSnapshots-Rev.1293550 installation fails on clean systems, where
NEITHER OOo 3.3 is installed NOR an MSVC++ 9.0.30729 Redistr.
- The installation does work on a system, where OOo 3.3 (or maybe parts
thereof) is installed, even though there is no MSVC++ 9.0.30729 version
installed and though a call to "unopkg sync" obviously needs it and fails. But
the call is not fatal for the installation process under these circumstances.
In my view, either unopkg must be changed to not depend on MSVC++ 9.0.30729
Redistr, or the latter has to be included in the installation package of AOO
3.4
