Shiro permissions and roles in the EJB3 container

Does it make any sense or is it even possible to access Shiro's Subject from
the EJB tier in order to check for permissions / roles inside, say, methods
of a stateless EJB3 bean or are Shiro's annotations and checks only meant to
be done on the web container (xhtml and JSF backing beans) ??
