What is DIfference between RPC and Messages

I am new to Apache Soap libraray. I saw two servlets rpcrouter servlet amd
messagerouter servlet. 
What is difference between RPC and Message?
How are Messages handled ?
Is there any documentation or references that would help?
Also Is there any way to use  SDL with the soap library.
