[DISCUSS] Apache Calcite Online Meetup January 2022

Hi all,

Last meetup [1] was roughly 10 months ago. How about organising another one
around mid January 2022?

Organising an in-person event would be nice but I think it is still a bit
complicated so I was gonna suggest a virtual one (via Zoom meeting).

The format could be ~1h for presentations and ~1h for open discussion.

Are the people willing to give a talk around Calcite?

What do people think in terms of timing?

Best,
Stamatis

I’d love to hear about your GraphQL implementation. (If the organizers think there is enough time in the meetup.)

I don’t think of GraphQL as “niche” at all. It’s a key tool for many, many app developers. It’s just that, despite the “QL” in the name, it’s not a conventional “query language”.

Hi all,

First of all thanks a lot to everyone who participated and supported the
idea of the meetup.
Special thanks to Alexey, Ioan, and Gavin, for presenting their work. All
presentations were very interesting and valuable contributions to the
community.
You can find their presentations here [1].
@Alexey, Ioan, Gavin: Feel free to submit a PR to add them in the relevant
section of the website [2].

The idea of recurrent meetups has been brought up in the discussion so I
will revive an old thread about this topic to see if there is more interest
now.

Best,
Stamatis

Thank you for hosting this, and it was nice to listen to the discussion and
learn.

I was sad Julian did not make it, I hoped he might be there to share wisdom.

There were two things I wanted to drop as a note really quick:

1) If there's enough interest, maybe these sorts of meetups could happen in
a more regular interval? Something like every month or few months?

2) Eugen asked a question at the end when I had to leave, about how to
manage and proxy to multiple databases. (The second part was about
implementing security/access controls)

I can help with the first part of the question with some code, as I am
having to do the same thing.
Here is an example of dynamically adding a Postgres + SQL Server DB while
the application is running to a global schema, then querying across them:

https://gist.github.com/GavinRay97/9e5f32c6664be13a27dd3c676f544719

Hope this helps and is roughly what you meant =)

Hi,

I read the previous emails about the GraphQL project and it looks
very interesting.
@Gavin: Please send us a title, abstract, and duration of the talk.
Don't hesitate to take more time if you need to. I think we still have a
bit of margin.

With this we can freeze the agenda for this meetup. If there is more
interest we can immediately start discussing the next one.

Although I appear as an organizer in the Apache Calcite Meetup group, this
does not mean I am the only one deciding about the agenda or when a meetup
should happen.
If other committers/PMC members want to take a more active role in the
organization I would be more than happy to add them as co-organizers in the
group.
Apart from that feedback & suggestions from anyone are always welcome.

Best,
Stamatis

GraphQL is still somewhat niche though, so I'll hold off on asking to speak
about it unless there are folks attending who are interested/using it.

Hello Stamatis,

I would also like to share my work.

Title: calcite-clj - First steps using Calcite with Clojure

Abstract: A quick introduction on using Calcite with Clojure language. I'll go through an simple example on how to use in memory table.
The example will cover REPL driven development.
If I have time I will showcase Apache OFBiz entity engine on top of Apache Calcite and how to query OFBIz xml files (OFBiz data exports) using the same engine (ongoing work).

Hello Stamatis,

As Vladimir previously mentioned, we would like to present our experience
working on join planning in Apache Calcite.
Title: What we've learned about join order planning with Apache Calcite
Abstract:
Apache Calcite provides an extensive set of rules for query optimization,
but how well do existing rules work for planning a large number of joins?
In this talk, we will share our experience trying to push Apache Calcite to
plan tens of joins using some known techniques, discuss technical
challenges we faced while implementing them for Apache Calcite and
potential changes to the project that may improve the issues we encountered.
Planned duration: 40 min (I believe we can make it 30 if needed)

Thanks,
Alexey

Re: Re: [DISCUSS] Apache Calcite Online Meetup January 2022

Posted by Stamatis Zampetakis <za...@gmail.com>.
Thanks for the feedback Ioan, it's good to know what people think so that
we can improve the content.

I don't know if you checked them already but there are quite a few
interesting talks about Calcite listed in the website [1].
Among them there is also another version of the "tutorial" [2] with a bit
more time spent on introductory concepts like relational algebra etc.

To those who are still planning to present something in the meetup: It
would be good if you can share title, abstract, and duration so that I can
create the meetup event.

Best,
Stamatis

Re: Re: [DISCUSS] Apache Calcite Online Meetup January 2022

Posted by Ioan Eugen Stan <ie...@apache.org>.
Hi,

Great idea with the meetup.

I've watched that talk and gone through the tutorial code - submitted some feedback and here is some more:

It's been VERY useful and I appreciate the work you do for Calcite and documentation.
Regarding the training (youtube video) also hard to follow for a calcite/relational algebra beginner like me.
I think an even gentler introduction / quick start is needed (not necessarily during meetup, but for newcomers in general).

I found the online video to go quite fast into explaining Calcite classes and WHAT needs to be implemented but it was hard for me to understand WHY - or I need more intermediate steps.
I had to go through the talk, the code and other code examples to better understand things.

So these online resources (videos, talks, blogs, tutorials and code samples) are VERY welcomed.

Although I am new to Calcite I might submit a small 5 min lightning talk if I have time to validate my idea :) .

Re: Re: [DISCUSS] Apache Calcite Online Meetup January 2022

Posted by Florent Martineau <ft...@gmail.com>.
Just wanted to mention that, as a newcomer in the Calcite community, the
BOSS tutorial is immensely valuable, at least for me!

Calcite is a complex project, with little examples online except in the
Tests. Having an overview of the main concepts and their implementation is
VERY helpful.

I would most definitely love seeing another of your tutorials, even if not
during the meetup. Thank you Stamatis and Julian for this awesome tutorial!

Have a great day,

Florent

Re: Re: [DISCUSS] Apache Calcite Online Meetup January 2022

Posted by Stamatis Zampetakis <za...@gmail.com>.
I would be happy to present something from the tutorial at BOSS in an
upcoming meetup.
Since it is a long time since the last meetup, I would prioritise talks
which are not yet available somewhere for the meetup in January.
If there is time I can fill it in, otherwise I will defer the material of
the tutorial to the next meetup.

It would be very nice to see something about graalvm and substrait in the
meetup; thanks for proposing to talk about these Jacques.

To all those who can give a talk in January please send a title, abstract,
and duration as soon as possible. I am waiting to have 1-2 talks to create
the event on meetup.

Best,
Stamatis

+1 for Jan 19

It would be great if Stamatis repeated one or two of the segments of
his tutorial at BOSS. (I was co-presenter but you've all heard enough
from me.) The material about adapters is foundational to understanding
Calcite. It could happen on Jan 19 or at another meetup in a couple of
months.

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

@ Vladimir O, Vladimir S: Thanks for proposing to give a talk.
I believe both topics will be very interesting for the community.
When you settle up on what you would like to present please share an
abstract & duration for the talk.

Since there is interest and we already have 1-2 people willing to give a
talk, I would suggest fixing the date/time as soon as possible.
How about Wednesday, 19 January 2022, 17:00 UTC [1] ?

If more people express interest in giving a talk we can either fit it to
the same meetup or organise another meetup in 2-3 months after.

Best,
Stamatis

And I’m curious about if there is any playback for this meetup, because somebody might couldn't attend due to timezone variety or any other reasons.

I think the new build structure is more like 30-45 min talk

From our side (Querify Labs), we may present one of the difficult use cases
we faced this year, such as large-scale join order planning, experience
with Cascades integration, planning for heterogeneous systems,
advanced statistics management, etc. We may need some time to figure out
what can or cannot be presented due to NDAs. If the dates are known, we
will start figuring out the possible list of topics.

I already presented at the previous meetup. So if there are more proposals
than slots, please prefer other proposals, and we will move our talk to
future meetups.

Regards,
Vladimir.
