[VOTE] Release Apache CouchDB 1.6.0-rc.3

Dear community,

I would like to release Apache CouchDB 1.6.0-rc.3.

Changes since last round:

 * https://git-wip-us.apache.org/repos/asf?p=couchdb.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/1.6.x

We encourage the whole community to download and test these release
artefacts so that any critical issues can be resolved before the
release is made. Everyone is free to vote on this release, so get
stuck in!

The release artefacts we are voting on are available here:

    wget https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/couchdb/source/1.6.0/rc.3/apache-couchdb-1.6.0.tar.gz
    wget https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/couchdb/source/1.6.0/rc.3/apache-couchdb-1.6.0.tar.gz.asc
    wget https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/couchdb/source/1.6.0/rc.3/apache-couchdb-1.6.0.tar.gz.ish
    wget https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/couchdb/source/1.6.0/rc.3/apache-couchdb-1.6.0.tar.gz.md5
    wget https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/couchdb/source/1.6.0/rc.3/apache-couchdb-1.6.0.tar.gz.sha

Please follow the test procedure here:

    http://wiki.apache.org/couchdb/Test_procedure

Please remember that "rc.3" is an annotation. If the vote passes,
these artefacts will be released as Apache CouchDB 1.6.0.

Please cast your votes now.

Thanks,

Dirkjan

Reproduced on Gentoo and FreeBSD with R14B04. That's gonna be funny.

erm and +1 for the record.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache CouchDB 1.6.0-rc.3

Posted by Dave Cottlehuber <dc...@jsonified.com>.
Here's my results so far:

sigs, hashes all OK.

debian 7.4 x64 -- OK (using default libraries from debian)
OSX Mavericks -- OK (using default libraries via homebrew)

No failures seen in the various output either. I've not repeated
James' failures but I have seen this occasionally during dev cycles,
without seeing anything specific.

I'm unable to build R14B04 via kerl on OSX btw, since Mavericks
upgrade. If you succeed do let me know.

I would suggest to the Release Manager that if others using James'
environment (OSX I guess, kerl-built R14B01 etc, any other details?)
*can't* trigger this issue, we ship. Thoughts?

A+
Dave

I got a two boxes with R14 erlang. Will run distcheck and see what can
do during this evening. Will send status report about back.

As for JS tests. No idea. Better to ignore if no one else could
reproduce unless more info will be provided.

Yeah, it's pretty frustrating.

What are we going to do here, folks?

did you have the chance to have a look at the problem?

Slowly, the 1.6.0 release is starting to have some "magical barriers" and
fighting against us ...

Thanks everybody for all your incessantly work!

According the comments around the code I was hope so, but suddenly the
issue is looks like OTP-9167 and acts as OTP-9167 - I'm not sure how
to classify it else then OTP-9167. However, I also have a feeling that
some code is missed around this note:
https://github.com/apache/couchdb/blob/master/src/couch_replicator/src/couch_replicator.erl#L299

Hrm, OTP-9167 was reported by Filipe, the main author of the current couchdb replicator, and he also changed how this was handled in couchdb to compensate. This is some ancient stuff, hard to believe it’s the cause of our latest issue. I must be missing something.

Ok, I've found the roots of this issue. It's even named as OTP-9167 as
was fixed in R14B03 and because of it 07-use-checkpoints.t fails for
R14B01: it couldn't run replicator worker with new child spec where
use_checkpoint bit flipped because supervisor hold the initial one, it
see that there replication with the same id going to happen and
restarts it with the old spec ignoring any changes. I could fix the
test, but I couldn't fix the issue in root and not sure that it's
worths to search for any workarounds nowdays (R14B03 was released at
2011-05-24, almost 3 years ago).

However, here are three solutions that I have:

0. Do nothing.
1. Isolate tests from each other to hide the issue (isolation is good,
but hiding bugs is bad):
https://www.friendpaste.com/1lnTEFg6RId5PDRAmvbBVO
2. On test failure check Erlang version and note that this failure is
*fine* for specific versions:
https://www.friendpaste.com/3TmqoNjEF3xnYtbLybSL7G
3. Add "+no_checkpoints" suffix to replication id if "use_checkpoints:
false" was specified. Thus, it solves the problem:
https://www.friendpaste.com/3TmqoNjEF3xnYtbLybSKpT (yes, some
refactoring love is required)
But I'm not sure that this is good idea.

Personally, I would prefer to keep this "bug" alive as reminder that
things for your Erlang version *could* happens wrong. Your thoughts?

No, not yet done. Btw, the error had been introduced with the initial commit:
https://github.com/apache/couchdb/commit/03bc164
and it was there all the time - nobody just tested CouchDB against
such old Erlang till now. Something works these not in the way that's
expected for R14B01.

Will try to find out the issue and fix it within today and verify that
I wouldn't broke anything else. Stay tuned!

Yes, but it also potentially means we keep taking destabilizing things into
the rcs. We're trying to converge on something stable (i.e. no test
failures). Obviously we do not do a good enough job of keeping master
stable, therefore I'd prefer not to keep merging everything into the
release branch.

We're supposed to have releases every month so that people never have to
wait long even if some feature or fix misses a release.

That said, I'd be happy to make an exception for your
lots-of-duplicate-bugs startup script fix, if we can deem it to be
low-risk.

Cheers,

Dirkjan

Sounds like you guys made good progress on it in the last week. I got stuck in a big storm that hit the US South early this week and it completely screwed up my travel but I’m at least back online now. :)

Alexander, sounds like you reproduced and are close to fixing the issue. Is there an easy shortcut to running a single test like this, I would love to have been able to make some actually helpful progress in the few chances I had last week.

Discussion on IRC suggested that we not cherry pick but pull directly from
master. This would be useful, selfishly, in that it would also pull my
startup script fix for which we keep getting new bugs. It also means that
we would have a 1.6.x branch that starts as a strict predecessor of master
in the future.

Hi Dirkjan,

here is the status update: etap tests 231 and 200 were fixed on 1.6.x.
The only issue left for replicator tests against R14B01.
As for R14B01 issue I can provide the fix right now, but it's not
very...correct. So the question is pretty simple: when you plan and
will have a time to cut 1.6.0-rc4? If this will happens tomorrow so I
have no reasons to hold the release. If I have day or two, I'd like to
continue investigations to make fix more correct.

Also, seems we have Erlang 17 support in master now...not single shot
was made, but looks like it build now correct. I wonder if it worth to
pick this fix to 1.6.x? Since Erlang 17 is already in Gentoo, Debian,
OSX and CouchDB 1.7 will be released only in June or July (hope no
more 1986-like issues will happens for us) - so I think this is actual
question for now.

Hi,

we just received a patch regarding a XSS issue in Fauxton which just landed
in master.

I also cherry-picked it to the 1.6.x branch.

Big thank you to Alexander Shorin for guidance & help!

Yes! Sorry for not being more explicit about it, but all of the test
failures seen soon after starting the vote on this made me feel iffy
about it. It looks like Alexander is currently making solid progress
on fixing those (though help from others is always welcome!), so I
hope I'll have an rc.4 soonish.

Cheers,

Dirkjan

The way I read it, with IRC logs to back it up, is that there are changes checked in that fix these tests, yes.

As such I think we need to cancel rc.3. I need to understand if Alexander is saying "confirmed *fixed* for R14B01" or not - if fixed, we can probably move swiftly to an rc.4.

I'm failed to reproduce this with R14B04, but will try to R14B01 as you have.

I've not succeeded in getting a properly working R14B04 on OSX
Mavericks (this was OSX, right ?).

Hey James,

Not sure if you know, but you can re-run the tests with a `-v` and see
the output during it, at least what etap shows us:

 ./test/etap/run -v ./test/etap/250-upgrade-legacy-view-files.t

for example.

It did but others appeared which leads me to suspect my local install of erlang, given what it takes to get R14 to build with clang.

Failed 4/16 subtests

Result: FAIL

deleted everything and rerunning, lets see if the same tests fail.

R14B04 should be fine (B02 is certainly not, though) and does have some important (but rare) bugfixes over B01. The strong recommendation for R14B01 comes from Cloudant. I’m going back now and running against R14B01 (the usual recommendation) instead of R14B04. Could be something odd between 01 and 04 and also this error was on OSX 10.9 not linux, so I’d stop short of saying that all of R14 is borked.

I think the fact that that you "get dist check passing" even though
some tests fail is pretty worrying. But apparently either no one is
reproducing these failures or no one is seeing them (since distcheck
passes anyway)?

So this works on R15, R16, but not R14? Isn't this what we fixed since rc.2?

iirc there was a discussion about which Erlang versions we should support.
Is anyone aware of that? So the direct question is: to which Erlang version
back do we have to take care for building CouchDB?

I get dist check passing. But when I run it, these two tests fail

21/87 /tmp/couchdb/apache-couchdb-1.6.0/apache-couchdb-1.6.0/_build/../share/www/script/test/design_docs.js ... FAIL
26/87 /tmp/couchdb/apache-couchdb-1.6.0/apache-couchdb-1.6.0/_build/../share/www/script/test/etags_views.js … FAIL

If I run them individually (make dev then ./test/javascript/run ./share/www/script/test/etags_views.js) sometimes they pass and other times they fail. I’m on Mac OSx 10.9.2 Erlang R16B03
