Some gadgets fail to render
I've set up PHP Shindig locally and the sample containers are working
fine. However when i try and render other gadgets I find that many
fail to render. For example the "BBC Now/Next" gadget
[http://google.bbcmodules.co.uk/nownext.xml] works fine but the "Nasa
picture of the day" gadget
[http://olivier.camard.free.fr/google/modules/nasapics.xml] hangs with
"Loading... Please wait" and firebug reports an error
"onLoadHandlers[i] is not a function" Also some of my own gadgets work
fine but others fail. Specifically one type="url" gadget that uses the
<UserPref urlparam=""> attribute doesn't work but when rewritten to
avoid using the urlparam attribute, works fine.
Have I misconfigured my Shindig install or some very basic parts of
Shindig itself missing/broken?
Cheers,
Tamlyn.

That would be a list of several hundred thousand gadgets. You'll probably
want to use more restrictive criteria.

Since there are many bogus gadgets out there, I think it is worthwhile to
compile a list of all known gadgets that are:
* Known to work with the current version;
* Use the social api (not just the gadget api);
* do a non-trivial task (not just "hello world").
This list can be used as an additional test suite - real-life tests.
(I cannot compile this list myself, because I still didn't manage to install
a full-working version of Shindig and Partuza on my localhost, so I cannot
know if a gadget fails because it is bogus or because of my installation).

We'll it's live on a number of social websites already, friendster
being the largest with 75 mil registered users; So it should be
production ready :)
That's not to say that every svn checkout works 100% of course, there
is a small chance a bug might sneak in at some point, which we fix
asap if we find it, but all in all iI think you'll find it's quite
usable :)
Goodluck!

I was hoping that the reason for this lay somewhere other than shindig
because i'm looking forward to using it as part of our intranet
(non-business-critical). Since posting this message I've also noticed
that after editing and saving the gadget settings, the gadget displays
correctly so I think there may be an issue with the module prefs code.
I'll keep looking.
I didn't mean to be inflammatory with my question but the last time I
tried Shindig (about 6 months ago) some very basic parts were indeed
broken and the website hasn't really changed since then so it's quite
hard to tell at what stage of development the project is without
trying it out.
Cheers,
T.

Hi Tamlyn,
I think the problem is in the gadget:
function nasapicsofday__MODULE_ID__() {
this.loader = function() {
// long implementation i'll skip here
}
}
_IG_RegisterOnloadHandler(nasa__MODULE_ID__.loader());
However that should be:
_IG_RegisterOnloadHandler(nasa__MODULE_ID__.loader);
because of the extra () the function is executed right away, and not
on the onload event ... instead the (empty) return value of the
function is assigned to the on load array, so when the onload handler
is called when the page finishes loading:
runOnLoadHandlers : function () {
for (var i = 0, j = onLoadHandlers.length; i < j; ++i) {
onLoadHandlers[i]();
}
},
it tries to execute a null value, which of course won't work ... and
that's the javascript error your seeing.
It might be that iGoogle's code does a != undefined/null check before
calling the function, and that's why you don't see the error there and
it ends up executing differently; However I wouldn't say that broken
gadget code would warrant the conclusion that "some very basic parts
of shindig are broken" :-)
