Thanks for the info, JB! I agree with updating NOTICE on `main` for the
next release.

Upgrading my vote to +1 (binding).

Cheers,
Dmitri.

+1 (binding)

Even if the NOTICE file is not fully complete (see below), the relevant
information is good enough in the NOTICE (LICENSE is a blocker for me, and
LICENSE is good here).
I suggest updating the NOTICE for the next release.

I checked:
- source distribution
-- signature and checksum are good
-- LICENSE and NOTICE are good
-- ASF header present in expected files
-- No binary/compiled file found
- binary distribution (bundle jar)
-- signature and checksum are good
-- LICENSE is good (just two nits: even if iq80 leveldb is covered by
leveldbjni documentation, it's also possible to document iq80 leveldb
directly, because it's a separate project with a specific NOTICE).
-- NOTICE needs two update:
---- Snappy is Apache licensed dependency (not ASF), and has a NOTICE (
https://github.com/xerial/snappy-java/blob/main/NOTICE). This NOTICE
content should be included in our NOTICE.
---- Groovy is Apache licensed dependency (not ASF for the version used),
and has a NOTICE (https://github.com/codehaus/groovy-git/blob/master/NOTICE).
This NOTICE content should be included in our NOTICE.

Regards
JB

Hi all,

+1

I verified:

- Git tag: OK
- LICENSE file: OK
- NOTICE file: OK
- Build from source: ./gradlew build rat: OK
- GPG signature & checksum - source tarball: OK
- GPG signature & checksum - API JAR: OK
- GPG signature & checksum - CLI JAR: OK
- GPG signatures & checksum - Maven staged artifacts: OK
- Binary reproducibility: OK
- CLI JAR META-INF/LICENSE and META-INF/NOTICE: OK

I noticed one small detail: the API jar
(iceberg-catalog-migrator-api-1.0.0.jar) does not contain a
META-INF/LICENSE or META-INF/NOTICE. But I think this is OK since it's
just a thin jar.

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks JB for the timely updates about svn status.

Thanks Alex and Russell for the verification and binding votes.
We still need one more binding vote for this release.
Thanks.

FYI, we have again an issue on svn, impacting dist.apache.org (we can't
access the dist staging repository).

Sorry about that.

For licensing I did another Agent backed sweep it did pick up a few things
which apparently all Apache projects are also currently not doing so I
dismissed them as false positives.

Derby - has some IBM CLA,
Commons-math - has some Orekit disclaimer
Google Snappy - Has some bsd licensed code in the C++ code in the native lib
Google LevelDB - Similar BSD licensed code in native lib
jaxb-impl - We include a disclaimer for jaxb-api but not the impl

I checked a bunch of other Apache projects with these deps and none of them
mention these notices so I think we are fine

+1

Hi everyone,

SVN should be back to normal now with no data loss. You should be able to
access the artifacts for verification.

Hi

It's global: we have an issue with SVN at foundation level (see
https://status.apache.org/).

As dist.apache.org is on svn, it's not fully accessible.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Polaris Iceberg catalog migrator 1.0.0 rc3

Hi

Just to clarify: I said that we don't need to document ASF dependencies in
the NOTICE because it's already covered by:

"
This product includes software developed at
The Apache Software Foundation (http://www.apache.org/).
"

However, we have to mention NOTICE for Apache (non ASF) dependencies.

I'm verifying the release right now.

JB

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Polaris Iceberg catalog migrator 1.0.0 rc3

Hi Dmitri,
Thanks for the verification.

The snappy-java NOTICE file is not a standard Apache NOTICE — it's a
general informational file. The key question per Apache policy (Section
4(d) of Apache License 2.0) is whether this
NOTICE contains required legal attributions that must be propagated.

Looking at the content:

  - Google Snappy — BSD licensed, attribution is informational, not legally
required by BSD -
PureJavaCrc32C from Hadoop — Apache 2.0, but Hadoop's own NOTICE would be
the authoritative one - GCC Runtime Library
Exception — informational about static linking
                                                              -
Contributors — not legally required

                          - Hadoop reference — just a pointer

Comparing with how JB structured the existing BUNDLE-NOTICE in PR #36
<https://github.com/apache/polaris-tools/pull/36> — he specifically said in
his commit: "Don't mention all Apache dependencies (already covered with
the 'This
product includes software' statement)" and "Clean NOTICE (including only
relevant information) and only for Apache licensed dependencies".

                                    Snappy-java's NOTICE doesn't contain
any copyright notices or required attributions that aren't already covered.
It's mostly informational.

I will wait for JB's reply on this. And we can reconsider the vote based on
that.

Hi All,

I checked:
* checksum - OK
* signature - OK
* local build from source (incl. rat check) - OK

However, I see that the fat jar includes Snappy, but the NOTICE file inside
the fat jar does not appear to include Snappy's NOTICE [1]

Is that a concern?

Voting +0 for now.

Cheers,
Dmitri.
