I see a test dependency on https://logging.apache.org/log4j/2.x/log4j-slf4j-impl/dependencies.html#Dependency_Tree, not a compile/runtime dependency. Do you get a stack trace if you omit log4j-core?

I was expecting the behavior provided by slf4j-log4j12 which does pull in the appropriate implementation to get going immediately.
