Talking about Embperl at the O'Reilly OpenSource Convetion 2002

Hi,

as every year O'Reilly OpenSource Convention takes place in summer (July
22-26, 2002 -- San Diego, CA ) and as in the last years there should be also
a talk about Embperl. So I have submitted my proposal and the talk was
accepted, but unlike as in the last years O'Reilly has no funding for the
speakers. That mean that I would have to pay the flight from Germany to the
US, the hotel etc. on my own. That is more then it is possible for me. So I
can't go to the conference this year :-(, but I really like to see the
Embperl talk happen.

So now I am searching somebody who like to talk about Embperl at the OSCON
2002. You get free entrace as speaker (that saves you $1000) and the fame
:-) Of course if anybody likes to do the job, I will assist in prepareing
the talk as much as possible.

It would be really great if somebody could do the talk for me!

Gerald

Oh, I always wanted to vist prague. (I have been there when I was 5 years
old, but I don't remember anything).

Basicly I think this would be a good idea. The question is, are there eoungh
people interested in comeing to a pure Embperl meeting, so that it would be
worth the effort? Or are there enough other european Perl meetings, so that
another is too much?

Ack.

Yep, there are quite a lot conferences and meetings around Open Source
Software in Europe. Those are the next ones I know, although perhaps
not the same taste as OSCON (which I haven't experienced yet :-)...

+ LinuxTag: Jun 6-9, 2002, Karlsruhe, half fair, half conference
(http://www.linuxtag.org/2002/), the favourite Linux event of most
Linuxers in Europe. Interesting talks, interesting people.

+ International Linux System Technology Conference: Sep, 4-6, 2002,
  Cologne (http://www.linux-kongress.org/2002/)

+ YAPC::Europe: Yet Another PERL Conference Europe, Sep 18-20, 2002,
  Munich (http://www.yapc.org/Europe/2002/)

+ LinuxWorld Conference & Expo: Oct, 29-31, 2002, Frankfurt/Main, more
  business orientated (http://www.linuxworldexpo.de/)

+ German PERL Workshop: Mar, 5-7, 2003, Bonn
  (http://www.perlworkshop.de/2003/)

There are other OS Conferences, of which I don't know the date or
which have already been:

+ ApacheCon Europe: Next date unknown, last fell through because of
  lacking sponsors IIRC (http://apachecon.com/)

+ Annual Open Source Content Management Systems Conference (OSCMSC):
Last one was at Zürich (http://www.oscom.org/conferences/zurich2002/),
next one unfortunately will be in San Francisco, the second-next
will probably be held in Japan.

+ Linux-Expo: OK, this is definitely more fair and exhibition than
conference, it's every few months somewhere else, mainly in Europe
  (http://www.linux-expo.com/), not really my world.

Doesn't sound that bad. I really wonder, how many people would be
interested.

Indeed. How many people here are running commercial websites with
embperl or making money using embperl? It's only fair to contribute
back when there's a need!

Gerald - looks like you need to set up that paypal account and give us

If I could go to OSCON, I would bribe the wife to start cooking (I can't
pay people to eat my creations) -- but alas I cannot.

I would be willing to chip in some change that way -- if an account was
set up. ;-)

We first gather who would like to give something at
http://www.somewhere.com/pledge/. If we get enoungh money togehter I create
the paypal account. In this way we avoid extra work, in case we don't get
enough money, in which case I would need to transfer it back to all the

That's amusing. Actually you can thank Watson
(http://www.karelia.com/watson/) for that. I knew it had an exchange
calculator, so I went to see what site it was using. (I'll confess
though, that it took me about four attempts to enter the amount in
the first text field before I realized that the amount went on the
bottom and the results appeared on the top.)

I think the first step is to make sure we have enough pledges to meet
the total amount, then we can create a paypal account or do whatever
is necessary to actually transfer the money. So with that in mind...

If you would like to pledge money to cover Gerald's travel and
lodging expenses, please go to http://www.somewhere.com/pledge/ and
put in your email address and the amount. When we reach the goal
we'll let you know how to make the contribution.

I know that *I* make my living using Embperl and

www.paypal.com, the cheapest way for an individual to wire money to
anyone with either a paypal account or an email address (one needs to
actually sign up for the account to get the money, however.) If you

Thanks very much to all of you who want to donate money to make it possible
for me to go to the conference :-)

I have taken a quick look, the flight is currently about USD 1000, I would
need to stay 5 nights in San Diego (to stay over the weekend), because
otherwise the flight would 3 times that price. My internet connection to US
is currently very bad (lots of packet loss), so I wasn't able to check for
hotel prices, but I guess it will be not to cheap. The cheapest room in the
conference hotel is USD 185, I guess it would be possible to find something
cheaper in town, but I have been told that on friday the Gay Pride Week
starts and that the hotel prices will be therefor much higher than normal
:-(.

So for covering the flight and hotel we would need USD 1500-2000. If you
think if we could collect something in this range, I would able to pay the
rest (eating, transportation etc.).

Just to give you an impression about the relation: Things like eating,
transportation, hotel etc. are about as twice as expensive in the US then in
germany.

Thanks again very much

Gerald

P.S. What's paypal account? (sorry my non computer english is very bad
