I've just compiled the bridges without problems using the following properties in my ~/build.properties 
  maven.compile.source=1.3
  maven.compile.target=1.3

As setting these properties conflicts with the requirements for Jetspeed 2 (1.4) I'm going to create a RELEASE-TODO.txt document
under a bridges/docs/release folder (just like we have with Jetspeed 2).

The next release(s) thus should be compiled 1.3 compliant, at least, until we actually require 1.4 features.
