Gathering all project logos in high res (or scalable) format

Hi folks,
I've started a rather arduous task of trying to gather all project logos
in high res PNG or SVG format. To that end I've created a
committer-writable directory where PMCs can upload their logos in
whatever format they have, and I'll then work towards creating an index
of this, so consumers (be it journalists, press folk, users etc) can
easily get a high res logo for whatever project they are working on/with.

I'll be contacting all PMCs about this and hopefully they'll be able to
help me with this :)

Later on, it would be awesome if we could add bits of
automation/self-serve to this, like detecting new podlings and so on.

With regards,
Daniel.

I realize that this could be an issue, but I'm weighing it against the
"we have nothing" state of things right now. When someone requests
logos, we either have to go through PMCs and hope for something, or do
some googling ourselves to help people, and that doesn't seem right for
the foundation. This is trying to remedy that situation. Yes, it's
flawed in more than one way, but it's certainly a start.

In hindsight, I could have asked for URLs specifically, and if people
send me URLs, that's of course welcome as well. As for changes, there
could also be a situation where a logo stays put, but a new one gets
added, so we wouldn't know programatically that it has updated. There
are many things that can go wrong here, but I'd rather have a few misses
than nothing at all.

As said before, if this gains traction, I could look into some sort of
self-serve for updating and possibly detecting changes.

With regards,
Daniel.

It's not possible for a stand-alone copy of a file to update itself
when the original changes.
Whereas a URL will pick up any changes.

Without URLs, it's more likely that the old version of the logo will be used.

Of course it's still possible that the PMC creates a new file.
But at least it's easier to find siblings of URLs than orphan files.

Painfully aware :p a lot of them are outdated and none are truly fit for
press material. We had an issue not long ago where we needed to gather
all logos for a large banner showing the scope of the ASF, and it came
out very pixelated and grainy because of this, with some people pointing
out that "their" logo wasn't the right one.

I'm hoping to rectify that. Step one is gauging the actual level of
support for this (re the original email), step two would be to turn it
into an online presence, preferably with some self-serve feature included.

Please no Justin,

My PR is still waiting https://github.com/justinmclean/ApacheLogos/pull/3

Did you not receive my last email sent the July 27 after you asked me by email about it?

Jacques

Hi,

I assume you're aware of [1] (lowres images) and [2] (a bit of fun)?

It's far more likely that files will be updated than URLs.
Also generally if a URL in a source repo is updated, there is normally
some kind of trail which allows one to find the new URL.

Why not collect the URLs as well?

The other issue is that people might start to regard the files as the
canonical version.

That was a consideration point, yeah. I decided to collect files
instead, as I am interested in converting some lower resolution images
to higher res scalable versions. URLs can also be outdated, so
regardless, in the end, there should be some sort of form for either
uploading or grabbing from a URL. I haven't gotten that far yet :-). If
there is a good interest in the project, I will work towards that.

Logos tend to change over time, so unless projects are required to
update the directory whenever there is a change, the collection is
going to get out of date.

It might be better to collect the URLs of the logos instead.
