autoconf and extern inline

Sorry for the question that might sound as an off-topic (but actually is
not, this one should turn out useful also for mod_rivet).

I'm pretty sure gcc supports the inline function specifier (I checked it
with a sample program), still if I put AC_C_INLINE in configure.ac then
configure prints

......
checking for inline... no
......

someone has a possible explanation for this?
