[PROPOSAL] Added BSF distribution to the mirror

the apache software foundation policy concerning releases is now that all
releases should be available only through:

1. the main mirrored ASF distribution directories
2. the main ASF archives

bsf is not currently available through the mirrors.

my proposal is that:

1. the latest bsf release (2.3.0) be summed, signed and added to the
mirrored directories and linked from the main jakarta download page
2. the old releases be moved to archive.apache.org
3. all requests for downloads from the old directories be redirected to
the main jakarta binary download page where the latest release can be
download or the link to the archives can be followed

(unless someone else steps forward) i'll volunteer to carry out this work.
(unless someone corrects me) i'll assume that the decision will proceed
by lazy consensus. (unless someone forces a vote before then) i'll carry
out this work sometime after 12 noon GMT wednesday (10th september).

good. (that's what i though it was.) maybe i'll put create a page
somewhere with this information on.

this being the case, i now plan to move the release candidate and put a
.htaccess redirection on builds/jakarta-bsf (previous comments about
proposed timescales, other volunteers etc apply).

i don't follow BSF closely but if there are any issues that the BSF team
needs help (like lacking a release manager or not understanding how to
create releases the new way etc) with it'd probably be a good idea for
someone from BSF to post something to general or pmc at jakarta. i'm sure
there are plenty of apache folks who'd be happy to help out.

i've moved the release candidate to
cvs.apache.org/dist/jakarta/bsf/2.3.0rc1, added a redirect to the old
builds distribution directory and changed the main jakarta download page
to point to the new location.

BTW it'd be good to see a proper BSF release. if the BSF team need any
help then please contact either myself or (better still) the pmx at
jakarta.apache.org. we'll be glad to do what we can.

Well, we've taken a very long time to sort things out, and during that
period the idea of what should be placed where has changed quite a few
times. I wouldn't blame anybody for not following the discussion and
not moving files with every new decision - and jakarta/builds has been
used in Jakarta land for a very long time.

Having said that, my understanding of the current policy:

nightly build -> cvs.apache.org/builds
latest release candidates, betas, alphas, milestones -> cvs.apache.org/dist
current stable release -> mirrored via www.apache.org/dist
older stable releases -> archive.apache.org/dist

Yes, this is very much appreciated.

Of course. I know that Ant would love a BSF release that plays nicely
with Rhino 1.5R4 - BSF's CVS HEAD does, but the RC doesn't.

Re: [PROPOSAL] Added BSF distribution to the mirror

hi stefan

yes, i think you're probably right. now i look a bit deeper, the
builds/jakarta-bsf/release/2.3.0/bin doesn't actually contain anything.
(doh!)

on the binindex.html there is no BSF release but there is a milestone
release for rc1. this links to www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/jakarta-bsf/dev/
v2.3.0/bin/ but this redirects to jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-
bsf/dev.v2.3.0/bin/. i don't think that jakarta.apache.org/builds is the
right place to store release candidates any more. where should release
candidates now be stored? under cvs.apache.org?

(as you've probably spotted) i'd really like to get
jakarta.apache.org/builds sorted once and for all now. i think that it'd
be a good idea to move the release candidate to the right place (wherever
that is) and then put a .htaccess redirect back to binindex.cgi.

it's a bit of a shame that there isn't an ASF release available for BSF
(just a release candidate which appears to be data 12-Nov-2002) but i
suppose that's an issue for BSF.

There is a 2.3.0 release?

AFAIK there only is a release candidate and those are supposed to be
on cvs.apache.org instead of mirrors.

> 2. the old releases be moved to archive.apache.org

There shouldn't be any old releases yet.

This more or less happens now, but as I've just discovered is
currently broken. The download links on BSF's pages (in the
navigation bar) point to the template files directly instead of the
CGI script handling the mirror location logic.

Please see the appended patch.
