I was unable to replicate the bug described. The steps that I took were:
1) Opened Open Office Writer 4.0.1 in Windows 7
2) Typed some words into OO Writer.
3) Went to Insert--Footnote/Endnote. Changed the numbering to character and
entered ** in the box to the right. For type, I first chose Footnote and then
did Endnote. Clicked OK.
4) Another test that I did for the footnote/endnote was changing the numbering
to character and entered **> in the box to the right. For type, I first chose
Footnote and then did Endnote. Clicked OK.
5) Saved the documents as Footnote.odt and Footnote.doc for the Footnote and
Endnote.odt and Endnote.doc for the Endnote. When choosing doc, I changed the
save as type to .doc from the OO Writer. Also, when saving to .doc format, I
chose the option to keep current format and not save in ODF format.
6) Retrieved all the documents and compared them. I didn't see any of the
asteriks to the right. Both asteriks were in the same place prior to me saving
my document for both footnote and endnote.
Attaching screenshots for the ** test.
