https request problem

Hi,

I have a known problem getting a blank response on a HTTPS request. When
copying the GET request in my browser, I receive a perfect XML answer.
However, JMETER gives me a blank response. There are no errors in the JMETER
log. I've read the forum and tried to switch to a previous JAVA version 1.5,
but this doesn't help.

I use windows and jmeter version 2.4.
I also tried to change the https SSL property in JMETER.properties to force
Jmeter to use SSL. No effect.

To my knowledge the server doesn't require certificates. Normal login via
the browser is sufficient.

Any idea,

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

What I normally do, is first login via the browser in the web application.
Then I start with Jmeter doing some tests.
I am successful in doing test on the same server (however different URL)
that give me a clear response (e.g. image). However for one particular test
(on same server but different URL) I receive a blank response data. Sampler
result and Request tab (see below) are fine. I also tried with cookie
manager and header manager, but the problem remains.
When I copy the GET request to my browser, it works fine!
I did specify https and port 443.

hi
if your application needs authentication , what type of authentication (form
, basic, digest?). How are session ids maintained , if cookies do you have a
cookie manager? . Finally in your HTTPS sampler have you specified protocol
as "https" and port as the https port number (443 if you dont see anything
in the browser)

A surefire way to do this client side is to use netcat and fire the
*exact* request (all headers identical) to the server and see its
verbatim response.

Otherwise (and more simply) what sebb said.

Your browser has no problem and probably defaults to "text" or somesuch.

Is the response always roughly identical? If so, just compare the sizes
as reported by wget (or browser) with those shown by Jmeter. If they
match, you're probably good.

1. Although the server doesn't send the contenttype header, why is my browser
giving my the correct result?
2. Although I cannot see the response data, can I assume that the
response/throughput and avg. Bytes are still correct?

Thanks.

This is nothing you configure in Jmeter. The server is more or less
broken, so you may be out of luck.

If you must fix this on your own, here's what I'd do (but I've been
known to spawn tech horrors):

Install nginx on your local box and configure it as a reverse proxy for
the server in question.
It should allow enough tinkering to insert the missing header where needed.

Then see to it that requests from Jmeter are directed to the proxy
instead of the target server. You're done.

If nginx cannot insert the header, Apache possibly can, I never tried
something like that.

Be sure to have Jmeter use HTTP and not HTTPS, the encryption should be
handled by the proxy. Otherwise you cannot alter the headers.

Maybe someone will speak up with a simpler solution.

Cheers,
Felix

Indeed, Using firebug to check the GET request in my browser, there is no

The reason is probably that the server's response has no Content-type
header.
I'm not sure whether that can be worked around - maybe a default you can
specify in the Sampler or somesuch?

I'm also not an expert, but the "chunked encoding" gives me in another
request no problem. For some reason the contenttype cannot be identified. it
is supposed to be xml.

FWIW, I'm unfamiliar with the "chunked" encoding. Might this be an issue
for Jmeter?

[But the JMeter request is surely the one you want to debug?]

Be that as it may, when you wrote that JMeter returns a "blank
response" - what exactly do you mean?

Is there no information on any of the View Results Tree panes?

Or is it just the "Response Data" tab that is blank?
If so, what does the "Sampler Result" page say?

Unfortunately,

I have no direct access to the server logs. It is not our server. But as my
request via the browser works perfectly, I don't expect to find anything in
the logs.

Thanks.

Hi,

do you have access to the server logs as well? Do those indicate
anything unusual?
