Need more feed about gsoc expat-axis2c-integration
hi dinesh,
First I'm grateful to you for your quick reply you send for my first email.
That helped me alot to get some basic idea after going through some source
located in axiom/src/parser/libxml/ folder.
But i have some more things to be clarify from you before start on writing
the proposal.
After going through Axis2C manual and Axis2C source code I got some idea on
how to implement this feature. Here are those ideas i had during last week.
1. It is similar to the way you have embedded libxml2 in to Axis2C.
2. User have to install expat library before build with expat parser.
3. I have to implement all the methods which was implemented in these two
files with libxml2 parser wrapper.
libxml2_writer_wrapper.c
libxml2_reader_wrapper.c
4. I have to change the build system to build with expat parser.
Those are the ideas i had after familiarizing with Apache Axis2C. I just
want to know whether I'm going in correct direction. I think that would be
very helpful for me to write an effective proposal.
And the next important thing that i want to know is what sought of a
proposal you are expecting. Could you please point me out what are the facts
that you are expecting in the proposal. For now i have some idea on how to
implementing this project idea but unfortunately i'm bit of confuce on what
to write on the proposal. So i need some feed from you to get some idea
about that too.
Thanks in advance
Lasith

We don't know it Yet. We need to verify it.

In the same way that we verified Guththila gives better performance
than libxml2. We could do a benchmark testing using those three
parsers.
thanks,

We need to do it without doing any changes to Axiom/C level. I still
think we could do it at parser wrapper level. However need to look
into more detail on this.

Yes, I agree with Samisa. We know Guththila performance compared to
Libxml2. If we have a performance comparison of Libxml2 and expat we
may get an idea about which one is faster. But I couldn't find a
comparison of these two.
Another concern is that Pull parsing (Stax) and Push parsing are
opposite of each other. In SAX, parsing is controlled by the parser
and model builder(i.e. Stax builder) doesn't have any control over the
building process. In fact there shouldn't be a model builder. So
without making significant changes to the current axiom/c builders we
may not be able to integrate expat. Also if we do this it will change
the basic model(Stax) of the Axiom/C as well.

Supun..

So we are talking about wrapping Expat SAX API to come up with a STAX
API and then wrap it for AXIOM. Now my question is, would that yield
better performance that the current version of Guththila we have? If it
does, how can we verify that? If it does not, why are we doing it?

Yes, That is the challenge, when we implementing we might happen to
come up with a pull API on top of the SAX. Otherwise there is no much
work to do in this project. I'm glad that you raise this question.

Hi Dinesh,
Just for the curiosity, can we integrate expat to Axiom/C? AFAIK
expat is not a pull parser. It registers functions for various events
and calls these functions when it goes through the XML.
I'm not sure weather expat has a pull API.

We wrap the pull API of libxml2.

May be we should benchmark Guthtila against Expat and see.

At one stage of developing Axis C++ we had support for both Expat and
libxml. At that time as I remember Axis2/C supported an pull api which
is not exactly STAX(STAX API was not finalized by then AFAIK). Do we
currently wrap around a pull libxml2 api or SAX libxml2 api?. If latter
then wrapping around expat(which is SAX AFAIK) won't be a much problem.
Anyway giving a try with the world's fastest xml parser is worth IMHO ;-)
thanks

I would say Yes, However it might be little different since expat
doesn't have StAX API.

Yes.

Actually You have to implement methods under
axiom/src/parse/xml_writer.c and
axiom/src/parse/xml_reader.c , both guththila and libxml2 implemented
that.
> 4. I have to change the build system to build with expat parser.
Definitely, After successful integration we could give --enable-expat
option.

AFAIU, you have sufficient understanding about this
implementation.

I don't have a clear I idea about what should be in proposal. The
points mentioned in here [1] are good enough for me. I think this [2]
is a good proposal to get an idea.
