This feature is used in a commercial deployment of BuildStream. For now we copy 'tar.py' and '_downloadablefilesource..py' into our main Git repo, rename 'tar.py' to 'tar2.py' and use it as a source plugin. This allows pulling sources from artifact server using HTTP basic auth.
