Start of Tomcat and/or Apache Web Server

Dear All,
Setting up Apache Web Server and Tomcat Web Server :
      I have latest version of Apache and Tomcat Servers....
Can I do the following :
1. Can I run Tomcat alone ?
2. Can I run JSP on Apache Web Servers ?
3. When I type startup at Tomcat Server home directory  on command line
... It  gives me OFF.
Could someone please help in basic configuration ?
