Yes, if their vote succeeded, but if it didn't we were going to
re-evaluate at that time.

I'm sorry I don't understand. Weren't we going to release with released
Lucene artifacts? If yes, wouldn't we have to regenerate the Solr artifacts?

And it's much easier for people to use a Solr release if we could
actually *release* one!!!
But yes, it looks like we will spin a new Solr release.

I think someone has already pointed this out before. On numerous occasions
I have had to dig into the Lucene code when writing code to extend Solr. So
it will be much earier to make sure that I am looking at the right code if
Solr uses an official release of Lucene, as opposed to a particular SVN
revision.

Just make sure you apply the patches to the branch, too. Or, we can
delete the branch and recreate it.

Good catch - can you fix? It's likely just a packaging issue?

Re: [VOTE] Release Solr 1.4.0

Looks like excludes clause in packaging is excluding everyting under classes
which the missing file is.

src/test/test-files/solr/lib/classes/empty-file-main-lib.txt

$ grep classes build.xml
  <target name="javadoc-contrib" description="Generate javadoc for
contrib classes" depends="build-contrib">
           classes we want to build factories for
  files that this task should use when looking for classes that
  FYI: The file ${stub.list} contains a list of classes
           <!-- place to put special case classes we want to ignore -->
        excludes="lib/README.committers.txt **/data/ **/logs/*
**/classes/ **/*.sh **/bin/ src/scripts/ src/site/build/ **/target/
client/ruby/flare/ client/python contrib/**/build/ **/*.iml **/*.ipr
**/*.iws contrib/clustering/example/lib/**
contrib/clustering/lib/downloads/**" />

So I guess it needs to be specifically included... or moved out from
under classes (I haven't looked at the test to see if it needs to be
there).

The test case org.apache.solr.core.SolrCoreTest.txt is failing because of a
problem with the test itself. A test data file it is expecting is missing.
This should not hold up the release. But since we have a little time, maybe
it is worth fixing.

I used this with an existing application (with a 1.3 schema+solrconfig) and
then another with (an old 1.4 trunk schema+solrconfig). Everything looks
fine. Memory usage has decreased.

However, I've seen at least two reports in solr-user about memory usage
increasing rapidly when jars are dropped in solr_home/lib which I haven't
had time to reproduce. Also there is a report of a deadlock issue with
StreamingUpdateSolrServer which I can reproduce.

I'll try to look into these issues more deeply later this week. The memory
usage issue might be a show stopper. I'm not sure if we should go ahead
right now.

Tested on Redhat EL5 with SUN Java 1.6.0_16 and Resin 3.0.23. All my custom

QParser, and UpdateRequestProcessor) work as expected without any problem.

Nice job everyone:-)

But you will replace the lucene jars in the artifacts before releasing?
Because it would not be good to have jar files with version 2.9.1 in the
package that are not the officially released 2.9.1 artifacts.

So what we feared has come to pass - Lucene found more bugs and is
going to restart the release.
The bugs found however, don't affect Solr... so I think we should just

Also, not sure what the policy is on voting on files where the pom
still needs to change..

http://people.apache.org/~gsingers/solr/1.4.0/maven/org/apache/solr/solr-core/1.4.0/solr-core-1.4.0.pom
points to:
<dependency>
  <groupId>org.apache.lucene</groupId>
  <artifactId>lucene-analyzers</artifactId>
  <version>2.9.0</version>
</dependency>

But we really want to point to 2.9.1....
I guess we can go ahead and change that even though 2.9.1 does not
exist in any repository yet?

Re: [VOTE] Release Solr 1.4.0

Posted by Nicholas Letourneau <ni...@trulia.com>.
Not sure who gets a vote, and this is my first message to this list, but I
wanted to add that I deployed the maven artifacts (along with the lucene
2.9.1 ones) to my in house maven repository and successfully built all my
solr dependant projects with

    <dependency>
      <groupId>org.apache.solr</groupId>
      <artifactId>solr-core</artifactId>
      <version>1.4.0</version>
    </dependency>
    <dependency>
      <groupId>org.apache.solr</groupId>
      <artifactId>solr-solrj</artifactId>
      <version>1.4.0</version>
    </dependency>

Everything went swimingly and running "mvn dependency:tree" showed this
output:

By other issues, I mean the duplicate libs. I think we can live with
them.

: OK, take two is up in the same place. Please vote.

I thought we'd fixed this, but we still several dependency jars included
multiple times in the release artifacts...

hossman@brunner:~/tmp/solr1.4$ find apache-solr-1.4.0 -name \*.jar | perl -ple 's{.*/}{}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -r | perl -nle 'print unless /^\s*1\s/'
   3 commons-io-1.4.jar
   3 commons-codec-1.3.jar
   2 wstx-asl-3.2.7.jar
   2 slf4j-api-1.5.5.jar
   2 log4j-1.2.14.jar
   2 jcl-over-slf4j-1.5.5.jar
   2 geronimo-stax-api_1.0_spec-1.0.1.jar
   2 commons-lang-2.4.jar
   2 commons-httpclient-3.1.jar

...by itself i wouldn't let that stop us from releasing, but what does
concern me a little bit is that we're also including different versions of
some jars, which seems like it could easily cause some weird errors for
people in some situations...

Using extraction combined with clustering and/or velocity...
apache-solr-1.4.0/contrib/extraction/lib/commons-lang-2.1.jar
apache-solr-1.4.0/contrib/clustering/lib/commons-lang-2.4.jar
apache-solr-1.4.0/contrib/velocity/src/main/solr/lib/commons-lang-2.4.jar

Using extraction in solr...
apache-solr-1.4.0/dist/solrj-lib/geronimo-stax-api_1.0_spec-1.0.1.jar
apache-solr-1.4.0/lib/geronimo-stax-api_1.0_spec-1.0.1.jar
apache-solr-1.4.0/contrib/extraction/lib/geronimo-stax-api_1.0_spec-1.0.jar

Using extraction ... at all ...
apache-solr-1.4.0/contrib/extraction/lib/poi-ooxml-3.5-beta5.jar
apache-solr-1.4.0/contrib/extraction/lib/poi-ooxml-3.5-beta6.jar

This one should actually cause any problems, since the 2.5 copy is just
what jetty uses...
apache-solr-1.4.0/lib/servlet-api-2.4.jar
apache-solr-1.4.0/example/lib/servlet-api-2.5-6.1.3.jar

...does anyone think these are likely to be problematic enough that we
they *must* be fixed before releasing?

	?

(At a minimum: can someone who is familiar with the velocity code before
test it out in combination with extraction? ... i'm not even sure what to
look for)

Hmmm, weren't you going to update the version numbers to 1.4.1-dev
like we just discussed in the other thread?
That way if someone changes some of the solr source from the download
and recompiles, they don't get a version number of 1.4.0

So what we feared has come to pass - Lucene found more bugs and is
going to restart the release.
The bugs found however, don't affect Solr... so I think we should just
continue with our vote.
