The default SqlTimestampConverter converter is not configured to use a default 
value. You can create an instance of that converter with a "null" default 
value (using "null" in the constructor that takes a default value) and 
register it in the following way:

ConvertUtils.register(new SqlTimestampConverter(null), Timestamp.class);
