Java2WSDL, WSDL2Java and interface types

It is my understanding that the methods of an interface or class passed to
Java2WSDL cannot use interface types for parameter or return types. Is this
correct?

If so, why is this restriction in place? Couldn't the types of the data to
be passed in SOAP requests and responses be inferred by assuming a Java Bean
pattern and looking at get/set methods?
