[jira] [Created] (VCL-561) Image inventory

Image inventory
---------------

                 Key: VCL-561
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/VCL-561
             Project: VCL
          Issue Type: New Feature
Components: database, vcld (backend), web gui (frontend)
    Affects Versions: 2.2.1
            Reporter: Andy Kurth
            Priority: Minor
             Fix For: 2.4

It would be useful to automatically retrieve information from image revisions and store this information in the database.

Some examples of information which would be valuable:
-List of all the applications installed
-Patches installed
-Whether or not the firewall is enabled
-Firewall port exceptions
-Users stored in the image

This information would be valuable in many ways:
-Users could specify which application they want to use on the website and a list of images with that application could be displayed.
-Licensing -- if you need to know which images contain a specific application in order to plan license purchases or ensure compliance.
-Security -- Suppose your base image had an extra user account with a weak password. You could identify any images/revisions created from it and secure them.
