This specific error 

AttributeError: 'FileDescriptor' object has no attribute 'message_types_by_name' `

Will happen when protobuf-python-2.3 gets in the way of the protobuf-python-2.4.1 library bundled with Mesos.

In my specific case I am building for CentOS 6.4 using Mock, the SPEC file specifies the build requirements. To fix this issue I had to remove the protobuf-python package
(e.g. remove BuildRequires:  protobuf-python). By default the EPEL package installs version 2.3.0.
