In the trunk, with a Sane build, I see the following instead of the NPE:
ij> insert into t(x) values 'a';
ERROR XJ001: Java exception: 'ASSERT FAILED If column is not autoinc and have defaultInfo, isDefaultValueAutoinc can not be true: org.apache.derby.shared.common.sanity.AssertFailure'.
