Newbie needs help with broken XmlMapper.class

I'm using Tomcat/Apache for the first time so please
excuse my ignorance.

Here's the problem: I'm trying to make a webapp but I
can't get Tomcat to start up.  It always gives me this
error:

XmlMapper: Can't find method setDescription in
Wrapper(startup null) CLASS class
org.apache.tomcat.core.ServletWrapper


Do I need to build a new version of the core package
or what?
