Howto: SSL-secured area

Hello,

I would like to secure some of our publication (think of an internal 
area) with SSL, but first I would like to know what checking the box 
"SSL" does. I suppose that I have to configure my apache installation 
also, but some clarification in your behalf would be greatly 
appreciated!
