building hadoop from svn

hello i'm reading this guide

first of all ant clean jar jar-test ivy-publish-local fails to find 
ivy-publish-local. the guide is pretty old, is this normal?
avro fails to checkout as well, is it really needed in building hadoop?

secondly, after following through the whole thing i end up with 3 
directories. each has a conf folder etc. how is one supposed to use this 
setup?

a link to another tutorial or some tips greatly appreciated
