It looks like a case of mutated code.  I think UNKNOWN was originally
meant to be for colors with an undefined hue or something like that, but
yes, it is pretty darn wrong.

Anyhow, I have a patch to fix this and clean up the color testing quite
a bit (improving S/O ratios somewhat too) and once I'm done testing it,
I'll commit it.
