+<p>Every year, the OpenOffice.org community gathers to exchange
+ideas and have fun at the international OpenOffice.org Conference <span id="st" name="st" class="st0">(OOoCon)</span>.
+The conference gives those interested in OpenOffice.org, whether they
+are developers, marketers, business people, artists, or public sector
+representatives the opportunity to meet each other in a convivial
+environment. They can share ideas, tips, code, technology, business
+plans; drink beer, eat great food, and learn how the most important
+open source project in the world is changing things for the better.</p>
+<p>Our Marketing Lead, Jacqueline McNally, <a href="http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=announce&msgNo=267">announced</a>
+a call for location for <span id="st" name="st" class="st0">OOoCon</span> <span id="st" name="st" class="st0">2006</span> last year.
+Two respondents, Sophie Gautier and Angelika Gößler,
+presented on behalf of their organizing teams proposals to hold the
+conference in either Lyon, France or Vienna, Austria.</p><p>These
+proposals have been summarized <b><a href="##PROPOSALLYON">below</a></b>.</p>

+Why is your location and the date you propose the best for OOoCon

+OooCon 2006 in France will give several advantages
+to the
+worldwide community, and Lyon is a particularly attractive town
+situated in the middle of
+our country (well approximately ;) <br> <br>
+Our group has a large community of users and contributors, and
+is a
+strong member of the <a href="http://native-lang.openoffice.org/">Native-Language
+Confederation</a>. More than seven
+government ministries have now started
+their migration to
+Openoffice.org, or plan to adopt it. Major departments such as
+the Direction Générale des
+Impôts (taxation), the National Gendarmerie, and the Ministry
+of
+Culture are
+using OOo and contributing to the community with documentation
+and tools.
+Many hospitals, schools and universities, and city councils are using
+OOo on a
+day
+to day basis! <br> <br>
+While our community includes a large base of professionals,
+it
+also involves OOo specialists such as consultancies, developers
+or trainers who participate actively in the project. Outside the
+community, several organizations such as <a href="http://libresoftware.educ.april.org">April,</a> <a href="http://www.aful.org/">Aful</a>, <a href="http://www.adullact.org">Adullact</a>, and <a href="http://www.mutualibre.org/">Mutualibre</a> are
+strong open-source software supporters, and promote our project through
+their
+activities. This creates opportunities for dialogue between different
+types of
+communities with different perspectives.<br><br>
+</p><p>As for Lyon, it's a delightful town, a listed UNESCO
+World Heritage City, very modern and well equipped with all the
+necessary infrastructure for this kind of event (several
+universities,
+conference centres, special passes for transportation...). Lyon is not
+very far from
+Germany, so our Hamburg team will find it
+easy to attend, and also quite central in Europe for several
+countries. Please

+known place for gastronomy, what about spending an

+The conference will be organized in INSA, one of the top French
+engineering universities. INSA Lyon (Institut National des Sciences
+Appliquées de
+Lyon), multidisciplinary and international, is at the heart of the
+European
+Higher Education Area. Accomodation (in rooms for 2 people) is
+available five

+initial idea has come from the
+Viennese city management (IT
+- MA14) who will have finished their rollout of 6000
+workstations

+The OpenOffice.org Community has got very good support from
+the Government of Vienna. The MA 14 also have provided their

+The conference will be of public interest; we also expect participation

+ <p>By registering now, you help us to prepare for your arrival and tailor the conference to your
+ needs and expectations. Registration is free, but there is nothing preventing you from donating to the
+ OpenOffice.org project on your arrival in Lyon. On arrival at the Conference, please go to the
+ welcome desk to collect your conference material including maps, programmes, etc.</p>

+ <p>En vous inscrivant, vous nous aidez à préparer votre arrivée et faire de meilleures
+ conférences selon vos besoins et requêtes. L'inscription est gratuite, mais rien ne vous
+ empêche de faire un don au projet OpenOffice.org lors de votre accueil à Lyon. Lorsque
+ vous arriverez, vous devrez d'abord vous rendre au point d'accueil pour retirer le matériel
+ nécessaire pour suivre les conférences comme des plans, le programme et d'autres choses.</p>
+
+ <p><strong>Si vous désirez un accès Wifi</strong>, choisissez "Oui" dans le formulaire suivant.
+ Vous recevrez ainsi un login et un mot de passe à utiliser pour vous connecter au réseau. De
+ nouveaux comptes pourront être créés au point accueil lors des conférences si
+ vous avez oublié de cocher la case lors de l'inscription.</p>
+
+ <p><strong>Pour prévoir suffisament de repas</strong>, nous avons besoin que vous nous disiez quand
+ vous serez à Lyon pour midi. Avec cette information, nous pourrons demander à quelques restaurants
+ autour d'être prêts à vous accueillir. Afin de vous faire profiter des conférences
+ comme vous l'attendez, dites-nous si vous préférez manger rapidement des sandwiches ou prendre
+ votre temps autour d'un repas chaud.</p>
+
+ <p><strong>Des chambres à l'INSA</strong> pourront vous être louées pour
+ 24 € par nuit, avec une prestation hotelière. Cependant il n'y en aura pas pour tout
+ le monde. Les premiers seront servis dans la limite du nombre de chambres disponibles. Vous
+ pourrez réserver une chambre avec ce formulaire. Dans ce cas, vous recevrez un
+ e-mail par la suite pour vous annoncer si vous avez une chambre ou pas.</p>

+ discussion will touch both on the product and project: What OpenOffice.org
+ 2.0.x (released on last year's anniversary) has accomplished and how the
+ Project has evolved over the last year, in part because of the
+ product's accomplishments. The evolution has made the Project more
+ open to developers and other contributors; it has also brought into focus our
+ market position—and the responsibilities associated with it. I conclude
+ this paper by examining the options available to us and suggesting a strategic
+ plan for the coming years.</p>

+ project depends on them. It will present the Native-Lang Confederation,

+ social/economical development.An update on the Native-Language Confederation
+ will also be made.</p>

+ <p>The Marketing Project believes the next twelve months are crucial to the
+ development of OpenOffice.org. The product is better then ever. Microsoft is
+ losing the sympathy of several of its key markets, and OpenOffice.org is the
+ only realistic alternative. 2006 is UNESCO's year of Mother Languages in
+ Cyberspace, and OpenOffice.org is uniquely poised to exploit the demand to
+ use software in mother languages. Public administrations and commercial
+ organizations are starting to realise the value locked in their office documents,
+ and OpenOffice.org is the market leader in supporting ISO 26300 file formats.</p>
+
+ <p>For all these reasons and more, OpenOffice.org is the answer - we know why we
+ use it; we need to get the message out to those who don't. At the same time,
+ the Community needs to increase its membership: developers, translators,advocates,
+ end user support. We know why we volunteer to work in the Community - we need to
+ get that message out too.</p>
+
+ <p>The Marketing Project is responding to this with a campaign 'why.openoffice.org'.
+ This session will explain the drivers behind the campaign and explain what every
+ conference delegate needs to know to go home and answer the question:“Why
+ OpenOffice.org?” why should people in target markets like governments, SMEs,
+ universities, schools, etc. implement OpenOffice.org? why should developers rise
+ to the challenge of working on the code? why should people volunteer to work in the
+ Community?</p>

+ <p><strong>John McCreesh</strong> had spent a lifetime in commercial IT before discovering open
+ source during the dot-com boom. After dabbling in coding,,John realized he could
+ do less damage to his pet open source projects by publicizing them rather than
+ hacking them. His interests have ranged over projects as diverse as qvwm, php, Rails,
+ LTSP, Ubuntu, WordPress and of course OpenOffice.org, where he has been co-Lead of
+ the Marketing Project for two years before becoming Lead in May 2006.John's
+ support for open-source ties in with his other non-IT interests such as sustainability
+ and fair economic systems.</p>

+ <p class="title">Visual Identity of OpenOffice.org Now and in Future</p>

+ <p>Since the release of OpenOffice.org 2.0 the office suite gets more and
+ more public attention all over the world. People should recognize as well
+ the product as the community not only by it's name but also by the
+ visual impression they get.</p>
+
+ <p>If they get the same impression wherever they see any reference to
+ OpenOffice.org they should recognize it without reading the characters
+ – they should recognize it even if there aren't any characters
+ at all.</p>
+
+ <p>This “Visual Identity” is important for spreading public
+ awareness for OpenOffice.org and therefore we should try to include not
+ only the official OOo logo but specific bugs and symbols wherever we want
+ to promote OpenOffice.org: in marketing materials, on web pages, documentations
+ and so on.</p>
+
+ <p>The main bug is the pair of stylized gulls from our logo (in right
+ relative size and position), some other graphical elements are used to
+ refer to OpenOffice.org 2:
+ <ul>
+ <li>the blue-to-white gradient from the splash screen</li>
+ <li>the “wire gulls” (from the splash screen, too)</li>
+ <li>the colors of the program icons and the icons themselves</li>
+ <li>the S-curve from the icons.</li>
+ </ul>
+ </p>
+
+ <p>The Art Project created proposals for an updated logo, program icons and
+ additional bugs to be used as official branding elements for OpenOffice.org
+ after the release of OpenOffice.org 3.</p>
+
+ <p>This artwork will be presented to the community and hopefully will be discussed
+ among the different projects involved in this topic: Art, Marketing, Website,
+ Documentation and as many Native Language Projects as possible.</p>

+ <p>The localization activities of OpenOffice.org in India (done largely
+ by BharateeyaOO.o group and other Open Source L10N contributers) is on
+ the verge of creating a revolution as far as adoption of OpenOffice.org
+ goes in Indian Masses. Initialy started with an intention to provide a
+ BIPK (Basic Information Processing Kit) to general masses in Indian Languages,
+ the ministry bundled OpenOffice.org along with other popular Open Source
+ Softwares and released them as Free Cds which could be obtained by any person
+ by sending a simple mail. The languages that these Cds were released were in
+ Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. About 200,000 Cds have already been distributed apart
+ from making them available on the government website ( http://www.ildc.in ).
+ The Ministry has promised that the Cds will be released in all 22 scheduled
+ Indian Languages and OpenOffice.org has cemented its place in the BIPK list.</p>
+
+ <p>The popularity of the efforts and the quality of softwares is now making
+ some of the local OEMs (HCL, HP and Zenith) to consider pre-bundling
+ OpenOffice.org and other softwares. This helps them in reducing costs as
+ well as providing localized versions of the softwares. A National Resource
+ Centre for FOSS has been setup at Chennai India ( http://www.nrcfoss.org.in/ ).
+ One of the mandates of NRCFOSS is to build a localized Debian based distro for
+ Indian Government and Educational Sector. OpenOffice.org forms a major part of
+ this software especially in the Government Sector. BharateeyaOO.o
+ ( http://www.cdacbangalore.in/bharateeyaoo ) is helping NRCFOSS in integrating
+ OpenOffice.org and certain other specific OOo macros into their installation set.
+ Currently OpenOffice.org is avalable in 8 Indian Languages and more are in the
+ pipeline. In months to come OpenOffice.org is set to capture Indian Markets
+ in a big way.</p>

+ adoption process, OpenOffice.org is one of the main tools, althought, there
+ is a particular aspect in its community development in the country.</p>

+ <p>In Brasil, the project exists since 2001 and presented various problems,
+ from localization tasks to the trademark, creating a possible trap to our
+ users and developers. "Open Office" is a trademark registered in
+ 1996, on the National Office of Trademarks and Patents, and considering
+ a legal position, it's not possible to use this name or derivated versions.</p>
+
+ <p>The Brasilian Community generated critical mass and a support structure
+ for a number of users estimated in more than 7 million users, and with the
+ trademark problem, preventive measures were taken to ensure the ongoing works,
+ like the creation of a NGO called BrOffice.org, with the goal to collect resources
+ to invest in infrastructure and developers in our country, both to OpenOffice.org
+ and related projects, and beyond, to invest in projects that fights against
+ digital and social exclusion.</p>

+ <p>Today, Brasilian Community, protected by the BrOffice.org trademark, keeps
+ promoting and expanding the user base, encouraging new developers and projects,

+ one maintaining the filter inside the OOo code. Since this project lacks sorely
+ developer community, my experience might be interesting for those who would like
+ to lower the above mentioned barriers. It can be also interesting for knowing
+ which structures can be efficient for motivating and retaining new developers.</p>

+ development process. They serve as working base for Development, User Experience,

+ <p>A team of three community members took a closer look at the specifications.
+ It turned out that the quality of specifications written for OpenOffice.org 2.0
+ is too low. Analysis of a subset of specifications and feedback gathered
+ from the community confirmed the correctness of this finding. Further the
+ OpenOffice.org specification process is considered intransparent, bloated,
+ and blocking. The team started fixing the issues by improving the specification
+ template and by streamlining the specification process.</p>

+ <p>We looked at several factors that could help improve OpenOffice.org startup
+ performance, especially on Linux. We focused on disk sub-system-level solutions
+ to mitigate performance impact of several application-specific factors. At launch,
+ especially on cold-start, the application makes significant scattered disk accesses,
+ due to a combination of page-faults arising out of execution flow and dynamic
+ library loads interspersed with configuration reads and writes. We will therefore
+ focus on speedup techniques based on reducing the disk access penalty at startup.</p>
+
+ <p>A systemic approach of minimizing seek penalties is to arrange data blocks used
+ during application start-up in an appropriate sequence on the disk. We will briefly
+ describe our trace gathering and simulation environment for costing and optimizing
+ block order for a collection of application disk access traces. We will also discuss
+ results and experiences for a prototype reordering scheme for the ext2 filesystem.
+ We will outline the design and progress on a post-install reordering utility for
+ OpenOffice.org, and conclude by presenting some initial ideas on extending and
+ generalizing this approach into an adaptive monitoring and optimizing mechanism
+ with kernel and file-system support.</p>
+
+ <p>The second approach is a deep refactoring of configmgr using berkeleydb to,
+ in effect, coalesce configuration data into a contiguous disk block. A new backend,
+ dbbe, accesses xml blobs stored in the database, avoiding multiple file reads. We
+ will discuss our experiences creating a new backend as well as further opportunities
+ for optimizing configmgr.</p>

+ manager and lead developer at Turbolinux, designing TurboHA - a high availability

+ <p>The “Cleaning Up OOo Multi Threading” effort1 aims to put OOos
+ usage of multiple threads on a solid base, while simplifying the implementation
+ of thread related OOo respectively UNO code, eliminating anachronistic
+ constructs such as the Solar Mutex or the Main Thread Executor.</p>

+ <p>This sessions gives a brief overview over OOos current usage of threads and
+ how synchronization primitives are used to protect office code and data. It develops
+ a solution of how to simplify thread related code development and where OOo should
+ head wrt its threading architecture2. It gives a brief overview of the UNO based
+ implementation of the suggested solution, how it works and how it has been
+ applied to OOo.</p>

+ <p>OpenOffice.org is a large monolithic build, and has a large output install
+ image size. One problem of this is for distributions which want to ship bugfix
+ updates to their users and customers. For most distributions the smallest
+ addressable update unit is effectively that of src.rpm. All output rpms which
+ are generated from a given src.rpm are included in the update set.</p>
+
+ <p>Other similiarly large monolithic build trees have been split into separately
+ buildable modules e.g. x.org. This enables separate src.rpms to be created, and
+ independant update builds of the afflicted src.rpms with consequently faster
+ builds for updates, and smaller update sizes. Here I outline a sample modular-build
+ split of OpenOffice.org into OpenOffice.org-URE and the rest of OpenOffice.org.</p>

+ <p>The target of the BOF is that by discussing the problem and a prototype sample
+ solution an understanding might be reached as to the viability to a universally

+ <p>We will detail a new system being developed for openoffice.org, that will
+ allow automated testing of code changes and make life easier for QA.
+ This system, using build-bot, allows developers to submit their CWS or SVN
+ branch for building, testing, and install-set creation on different architectures
+ and configurations. By including performance, code-quality, and correctness tests
+ in the battery, we allow developers to track regressions across many platforms,
+ without requiring those platforms in their possession. By making install sets
+ available from the build, we enable developers to submit their changes easily,
+ even when they don't have the same platforms/build systems as QA.</p>
+
+ <p>In addition, the automated nature of the system makes running these tests
+ easy and painless. The “head” branch can also be automatically
+ tested, giving a running regression for the project as a whole. With this system,
+ we hope to make the process of making changes and getting them integrated
+ considerably less difficult for developers and QA engineers alike.</p>

+ <p class="title">OpenOffice.org Extensions Infrastructure: What it is - What it can - What is planned</p>

+ <p>The session will give an overview of the OpenOffice.org extension infrastructure.</p>
+
+ <p>The OpenOffice.org office suite gets more and more popular and the demand to
+ customize or extend the existing functionality by own extensions is growing as well
+ to integrate it in existing business workflows. Customized extensions can provide new
+ functionality or can be the interface to other applications, e.g. integration in
+ document management systems.</p>
+
+ <p>But what are the requirements for the extensions infrastructure to provide a
+ reliable framework for deploying and maintaining extensions for several versions
+ of OpenOffice.org? Even that is important for ISV's to protect their intellectual
+ property and to make it possible to run a business based on extensions and an
+ open source product.</p>
+
+ <p>This session will try to cover this question. Requirements like licensing,
+ versioning, dependencies and others are discussed and the session will give an
+ overview of the current status and what is planned for the near future. Besides
+ the common requirements a special focus will be taken on commercial
+ extensions.</p>

+ He was deeply involved in the development of the UNO component model which is
+ the foundation for the StarOffice API. Currently he is technical lead for the

+ OpenOffice.org. He is also the project lead of the OpenOffice.org API project.</p>

+ improving OOo's approximately 6 million lines of code. The author
+ will share the accumulated knowledge of Sun's OOo development team,
+ touching areas such as:

+ <li>dependency management: how to architect for encapsulation</li>
+ <li>tools for working on the code: IDE/editor review, (semi)-automatic
+ code transformations and refactorings, debuggers</li>
+ <li>patterns: the most frequent design patterns and their incarnations</li>
+ <li>helpers: the what and the where of helper functionality</li>
+ <li>recommended readings: literature, links to OOo resources (API
+ documentation, coding guidelines), mailing lists and news groups</li>
+ </ul>

+ <p>This session should be suitable for all levels of C++ programmers, that want
+ to become familiar with OOo's way of doing things in C++.</p>
