[Studio] Should we drop support for the Linux PPC version of Studio?

Hi,
As I'm currently going across DIRSTUDIO-523 (Update Eclipse dependencies to
version 3.5 Galileo), I'm wondering if it still make sense to support a
Linux PPC version of Studio.

Just like Apple is doing with Snow Leopard, I'd suggest we drop support of
this platform for the next version (1.5).

I don't think the ratio between the number of users using the version (if
any) and the time spent to maintain the internal repo with specific jars,
the size of the distribution on the repositories and during the release
process (uploading to the mirrors), is worth it...

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Pierre-Arnaud

Hi Emmanuel,
Well unfortunately, it's difficult to count as we have the same download
page for all our Linux downloads (x86, x86_64, PPC).

We've had more than 10 000 Linux downloads since 2009 january 1st.

But I'm sure the PPC version has not been downloaded more than 100 times
(+/- 1% of all the Linux downloads).

Regards,
Pierre-Arnaud

How many downloads ?

As we have had more than 100 000 downloads since Studio has been
released so far, I guess that if it's oly about a few tens, the we can
drop it, and let those who are interested in having such a release to
cut it by themselves, as we have all the instructions needed to get it
done. Of course, if they do, and provide the patches, we can apply them.

I understand your concern, Pierre-Arnaud.

Btw, why don't we have Studio working for my Sinclair ZX-81 ? ;)

A PPC version of the SDK version is available on this (hidden) page [1].
(Thanks Google...)

Yes, exactly.

As I said to Stefan, to me, the Cocoa version does not seem that mature... I
don't think it's worth wasting time on that too, at least in the current
state... Maybe when Eclipse Cocoa 3.6 comes out...

Good point Pierre-Arnaud

Just having a look at Eclipse download page [1] I can't find any PPC version. But for Mac a new one appeared (Cocoa).
ATM I think that we only support Carbon, right?

+1 removing PPC
What about the Mac Cocoa?

I think that the current version should work fine, as on Vista.
There should be no difference except on a 64 bit system.

Sure, lets stick with Carbon then.

I started to download Windows 7 x64 (yes, a legal copy from MSDN). I'll
try to install it on a VM.

Kind Regards,
Stefan

As I said on the Jira, I'm not very pleased about the current implementation
of the Cocoa version of Eclipse.
My Cocoa Eclipse wouldn't restart after a fresh install of Subclipse when I
tested it, and the UI still feels like a work in progress to me. It's not as
unified as is the Carbon version.
So I think we'll stick with Carbon until Eclipse 3.6.

However, I was also wondering about a Windows 64 bit version... But as, I
don't have any machine to test it on, it would be very hard to know if we're
delivering a working app...
Someone can help us on that?

Oh yeah that's true. That's a good workaround for those users.

Thanks,

I think we could drop support for PPC. It's more worth to provide an RCP
application for Cocoa and Windows 64-Bit in future.

There is always the options to download Eclipse for other platforms
(PPC, HP-UX, Solaris, etc) and install the Studio plugins from the
update site.

Stefan
