[VOTE] Struts 2.1.6 Quality

The Struts 2.1.6 test build is now available.

Release notes:
* [http://struts.apache.org/2.x/docs/version-notes-216.html]

Distribution:
* [http://people.apache.org/builds/struts/2.1.6/]

Maven 2 staging repository:
* [http://people.apache.org/builds/struts/2.1.6/m2-staging-repository/]

Once you have had a chance to review the test build, please respond
with a vote on its quality:

[ ] Leave at test build
[ ] Alpha
[ ] Beta
[ ] General Availability (GA)

Everyone who has tested the build is invited to vote. Votes by PMC
members are considered binding. A vote passes if there are at least
three binding +1s and more +1s than -1s.

The vote will remain open for at least 72 hours, longer upon request.
A vote can be amended at any time to upgrade or downgrade the quality
of the release based on future experience. If an initial vote
designates the build as "Beta", the release will be submitted for
mirroring and announced to the user list. Once released as a public
beta, subsequent quality votes on a build may be held on the user
list.

As always, the act of voting carries certain obligations. A binding
vote not only states an opinion, but means that the voter is agreeing
to help do the work

It might be better to set up an RSS feed and use something like
twitterfeed.com to pipe it out to twitter, that way we can cater for RSS
fans and twitter fans in one go.

BWT, since this is getting a more and more ususal practice, how about
opening a Struts2 twitter account to post announcements, grep fellows etc?

Since the personmanager is broken, would it be a problem to set one up
ala Spring/JPA/HSQLDB or any other embedded db? I would say we could
essentially grab the guide Musachy setup in the wiki.

I haven't clicked through the entire showcase app before, so I'm not
sure if some of the "view sources" links doesn't show any
configuration or "java action" source? Also, the MailReader link on
the "home" page seems broken. Other than that, everything seems to
work fine (token examples too), except for the mentioned PersonManager
issues.

Although it bugs me a little that I cannot verify cs validation (and
currently missing opportunity to dig deeper), it seems like it's just me
here, or my setup - so let's roll :)

Any volunteers for a slick press summary on the new features, given the
vote passes? It should be available by the time of a GA announcement,
since the last releases showed that the news was spread very fast, and
it might be good to influence what the news articles will emphasize...

(possibly binding?)

Rene, I didn't get the same problems... Person manager is indeed broken
for 'Create Person,' but I had no problems with the token examples. I
tested them pretty thoroughly and was able to hit the button three or
four times before the next page loaded. No matter how many times I got
the button, the proper balance was transferred (no double/triple
submissions).

The field validators with client-side javascript worked for me, as did
the others. I too was testing on Ubuntu and Firefox 3, but with tomcat
(in maven, but doing `mvn tomcat:run`).

I'm okay with Person Manager being broken.

Re: [VOTE] Struts 2.1.6 Quality

It seems like the get ant task sometimes fails to download the whole
file. Rene mentioned that he had the same problem when building 2.0.x.
I uploaded a new all.zip(just the /docs part modified) and doc.zip. I
am thinking about replacing that "get" task by an "execute" task and
use wget to download the file.

That's a nice catch!. It is kind of weird, I looked at the box where I
built the release and docs.zip is under assembly/target, but I
couldn't unzip it:

% unzip docs.zip
Archive: docs.zip
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of docs.zip or
docs.zip.zip, and cannot find docs.zip.ZIP, period.

The zip is fine in 2.1.3 but it is broken in 2.1.4, 2.1.5, and 2.1.6.
Also the cwiki zip (http://struts.apache.org/2.x/docs.zip) seems
right, so I don't have any explanation for this.

These examples are working for me, except Person Manager which is
indeed broken. Can anybody double check these examples? If they are
working fine then we can fix the doc zip "by hand".

Re: [VOTE] Struts 2.1.6 Quality

Posted by Rene Gielen <rg...@apache.org>.
Guys,

the wikidocs export seems to be missing both in the struts-2.1.6-all.zip
struts-2.1.6-docs.zip. The good news is that this does not mean that a
new release process has to be triggered afaik, since these are artifacts
which can be changed easily before final distribution (which is not the
case for maven artifacts). This should really be fixed before release.

Minor findings in showcase:
- token example 3 (token-session based .jsp example) fails, while 4
(fremarker) works fine
- field Validators with client-side JavaScript does no client side
validation, same with Validation (client) and Validation (client using
css_xhtml theme) (tested with Glassfish V2 / Firefox 3 / Ubuntu Hardy)
- Person Manager / create person is broken

Most of the these are good to fix in next relase, only the client
validation stuff might be a stopping reason. Maybe someone could
crosscheck - if it's broken in general, we should think of fixing it
before a release.

I think we also need a nice and handy "press compatible" release note,
which gives a good overview on 2.1 enhancements over 2.0 and why this
makes it the #1, most advanced action framework available :)

So far for now,
- Rene

AFAIK it's basically up to you to decide when the vote closes, as long it
has a minimun lifetime of 72h

I hope I will be able to check later this week, for now work piles up high
after returning from vacation. Nevertheless, great job so far, Musachy! :)
