(was: I'm thinking we need the LWP::Protocol module. This now provides https access from the client side.

Oddly, the 64 bit Linux WAS working at one point even after  we started running into problems with the 32-bit Linux builds. No idea what's changed unless a perl upgrade "rearrranged" things somehow.)
