output encoding

I'm trying to move a J2EE app which uses log4j to WebSphere 5 on zOS, so I
have encoding issues.  This app uses XML for the log4j config.  How do I
change the output encoding in the XML, or do I need to do a
setEncoding("Cp1047") (on WriterAppender, etc.) somewhere in the code?
