In Calc, unselected sheet tabs use a sans serif font. The selected sheet tab
uses a different font that can be difficult to read. The same is true for the
headers of the windows to the left and right of the slide viewer as well as the
tabs of the slide viewer window in Impress, the tabs in Draw, and the tabs in
Help.

If I uncheck "Use system font for user interface" the problem goes away.

There is no general problem known. It is likely some wrong settings on your PC.
Please have a look at this places:
1.
In Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > View you find the setting "Use system
font for user interface". Is it checked or not?
2.
In Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Fonts you find the font replacement
table. Are there any entries?
3.
There are settings for the desktop in WinXP. Please have a look at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310543/en-us. What are your settings for the
item "Dialog"?
